One of the best places to explore the artistic trends of tomorrow is in the art schools of today. Featuring work by nearly 100 students, this weekend’s MFA Open Studios at CalArts offers the opportunity to discover the next generation of working artists. Founded half a century ago from the merger of the influential Chouinard Art School and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (through the vision of Walt Disney, of all people), CalArts has long been at the forefront of progressive arts education. The event will showcase a broad range of work from the Programs in Art, Photography & Media, Art & Technology, and Graphic Design.

In addition to visual work, there will be a screening of short films, as well as a performance schedule. A few select highlights include Serena Himmelfarb’s carnal paintings and sculptures, Molly Jo Shea’s performance as a cryogenically defrosted head, Bradley Thompson’s assemblages investigating the trauma of being a veteran, Alicia Piller’s exuberant balloon-filled installations, and much more.

When: Sunday, April 22, 1–6pm
Where: California Institute of the Arts (24700 McBean Pkwy, Valencia, California)
