New Museum curator Margot Norton and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles curator Jamillah James will co-organize the upcoming New Museum Triennial in New York in 2021, the New York Times reports. No theme for the fifth edition of the triennial has been designated, though the focus will remain on emerging artists from around the world.
Norton has been at the New Museum since 2011. She joined the institution’s staff as an assistant curator, then was promoted to associate curator and, last year, curator. Among the exhibitions she has worked on are the surveys “Here and Elsewhere” and “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star,” as well as last year’s Kaari Upson show and a forthcoming Sarah Lucas exhibition that will open in September.
James was appointed curator of the ICA in 2016. Prior to that, she had been an assistant curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and a curatorial fellow at the Studio Museum in Harlem. At the ICA, she has organized exhibitions of work by Rafa Esparza, Maryam Jafri, and Nina Chanel Abney; she is currently working on B. Wurtz and Nayland Blake shows as well as the survey “The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies 1970–Present.”
Past curators of the New Museum Triennial have included Alex Gartenfeld and Gary Carrion-Murayari (2018); Lauren Cornell and Ryan Trecartin (2015); Eungie Joo (2012); and Massimiliano Gioni, Laura Hoptman, and Lauren Cornell (2009).
