나의 작품은 모두 물에 비친 그림자들에서 받은 영감들로부터 비롯된다. 빗물이 고인 길거리의 작은 물웅덩이에도, 잔잔한 파동을 일으키는 호수의 작은 물결에도, 밀물과 썰물이 교차하는 바닷가에도 우리의 모습들이 있다. 그러나 그 그림자들은 왠지 낯설다. 우리의 모습인 듯 보이기도 하고 아닌 것 같기도 하다.

세상을 바라보는 나의 마음도 이렇지 않을까? 세상을 있는 그대로가 아닌 나만의 창을 통해 바라보는 것은 아닐까? 오랜 세월 익숙해진 관습대로, 나만의 생각으로, 세상을 왜곡해서 보는 것은 아닐까?

나의 그림들에는 두 개의 세계가 공존한다. 사실적인 대상으로 표현된 있는 그대로의 외부세계와 그 대상이 물에 비치면서 왜곡되고 추상화된 이미지들로 표현된 우리의 내부세계이다.

나는 작품을 통해서 세상을 어떻게 바라볼 것인가에 대한 질문을 하고 싶었다. 왜곡된 색과 그림자들은 내 마음의 그림자이며, 세상을 인식하고 바라보는 내 마음의 자화상이기도 하다.

마음은 눈에 보이는 것도, 만질 수 있는 것도 아니지만 우리의 삶을 좌우하는 중요한 원동력이 된다. 우리의 행동에는 항상 행동의 동기가 되는 마음이 있다. 그림을 통해 마치 명상을 하듯 나의 삶을 돌아보고 싶었다.

My concerns are collision of interior world of emotions with exterior reality. From Many other inspirations that I had, the reason why I thought the emotions and our inner thoughts are so important in my art is as follows. Emotions are not materials that can be touched or seen, but become a trigger when we do or decide something. So my work shows the way our mind acts against outside world. After graduating MA course, I focused on the distorted shadows on the water because I think our minds interpret real world the way we want. It is like a warped twist of reality. The way our mind perceive the world would reflect the distorted shadows of reality. I hope my work to portray meditation or philosophy about our inner thoughts.

I wanted to make some works that have familiar and strange feelings at the same time. I referenced many contemporary artist’s artwork dealing with uncanny feeling, which is Freudian concept. “Uncanny is an instance where something can be both familiar yet alien at the same time, resulting in a feeling of it being uncomfortably strange. Because the uncanny is familiar, yet incongruous, it often creates cognitive dissonance within the experiencing subject, due to the paradoxical nature of being simultaneously attracted to yet repulsed by an object.” So I tried to shape profound and mysterious feelings, especially the uncanny feelings of our mind through my paintings and installation work.
