우리는 자신도 모르게 자기가 만들어 놓은 규칙 안에서 살아간다. 아니 태어나면서부터 인간은 수많은 규칙에 둘러싸여 성장해 간다. 일반적인 책상의 높이인 74cm! 이번 전시를 위한 여러 번의 만남을 통해 나온 전시의 규칙이다. 구체적으로 정해 놓은 수치는 두 작가의 작업에 새로운 가능성을 이끌어내는 단서가 된다.

 

김도균은 사진의 형식적인 면을 보여준다. 전시장 1층에 그 동안 해왔던 작업들 중 모노톤을 주제로 작품을 선별하여 설치한다. 작품의 크기와 내용, 프레임이 각기 다른 사진들은 74cm 높이에 밑변을 맞춰서 줄지어 걸린다. 작가는 수평, 수직에 엄격하며 모서리에 집중한다. 차분하고 간결한 이미지는 작가가 마지막 셔터를 누르는 순간을 연상하게 한다. 호흡을 멈춘 순간, 선택의 순간이다. 잔잔한 감성이 느껴지는 현실의 공간에서 우리는 작가의 추상세계를 경험하게 된다. 2층의 한 벽면에는 모서리 공간을 담은 하나의 이미지를 사진작업에서 가장 많이 쓰는 규격사이즈 5가지로 다르게 프린트하여 비율과 사이즈에 대한 실험을 하게 된다. 작가는 현대 건축물의 부분을 사진의 형식을 빌어 기하학적 추상 이미지로 그려낸다.

 

이은우는 일상에서 마주하는 물건인 가구를 만든다. 가구 같기도 조각 작품 같기도 한 물체는 관념적인 가구나 개념적인 예술, 실용적인 면과는 거리가 있는 물리적 실체일 뿐이다. 물체들은 전시공간의 74cm 높이 아래에 자리 잡는다. 초록의 원, 푸른 직사각형, 오렌지색 사각형 또는 검은 직사각형과 푸른 삼각형 같은 기하학적인 도형이나 색깔, 전형적인 관습에 의한 형태와 디멘션은 이은우의 작업에 추상성을 부여하기 위한 레퍼런스이다. 작업을 할 때 규칙과 레퍼런스가 가장 중요하다는 작가는 자신을 무언가로 규정지으려 하지 않는다. 언제든 가능성을 열어놓고 예술가로서, 시민으로서 또는 물건을 만들어 내는 사람으로서의 자아를 모아 새로운 에너지를 만들어 낸다.

 

두 작가의 기하학적인 조형언어는 상대의 작품과 조응하여 신선하게 교감하고 모노톤의 사진과는 대조적으로 원색의 장식성을 가진 구조물들은 전시장에 색다른 기운을 불러온다. 작가들은 각자의 규칙 안에서 자유롭지만 한 공간에 전시되는 작품들은 서로 긴장의 떨림을 전달한다. 김도균과 이은우는 이러한 규칙을 즐기고 있는지도 모른다.

We live within the rules made unconsciously by ourselves.  Rather, humans grow up surrounded by innumerable rules since birth. 74cm—the general height of a desk! This is the rule for the exhibition, which was set through many meetings in preparation for the show. The concrete number becomes a clue to draw out new possibilities from the two artist's works.

 

Kim Dokyun presents the formal aspect of photography. On the first floor of the gallery, he installed works based on the theme, monotone, which he chose among his previous works. Photographs with different sizes, contents and frames are lined up, hung so that their bottom side is 74cm above the floor. The artist is strict when it comes to the horizontal and vertical, and focuses on the corner. The calm and simple images make us think of the moment he finally depresses the shutter. The moment he stops breathing, the moment of selection. Thus we experience the abstract world of the artist in a space of reality, where a placid sensation can be felt. On one of the walls on the second floor, Kim conducts an experiment on proportion and size by printing a single image of a corner in the 5 most commonly used standard sizes. He adopts the form of photography to portray parts of modern architecture as geometric abstract images.

 

Eunu Lee makes furniture, which is something that people encounter in their everyday lives. The objects, which resemble furniture as well as sculpture, are mere physical substances that are far from notional furniture, conceptual art, or practicality. The objects are placed below the 74cm level in the exhibition space. Geometric shapes, colors, and forms and dimensions based on typical conventions, such as green circles, blue rectangles, orange squares, black rectangles and blue triangles, are references that give an abstractness to Lee's works. The artist, who says the rules and references are the most important factors in her work, refuses to define herself as something. While leaving all possibilities open, she combines her existence as an artist, citizen and maker of things to create new energy.

 

The geometric formative languages of these two artists correspond to each other's works in fresh commune, and the contrast between the monotone photographs and the decorative structures of primary colors evoke an unusual air within the exhibition space. The artists are free within their own regulations, but the works exhibited in the common space transmit vibrations of tension to one another. Perhaps artists Kim Dokyun and Eunu Lee enjoy such restrictions.
