2GIL29 GALLERY에서는 10월 21일에서 11월30일까지 권영호 ‘UNEXPECTED’ 전시를 마련했다. 권영호(1968년생)는 한국 사진계에서 매우 중요한 작가로 손꼽힌다. 중앙대학교 예술대학 사진학과를 졸업한 그는 29세의 젊은 나이에 한국 패션계에서 가장 권위 있는 ‘패션 저널리스트상’을 최연소 수상한 이후 끊임없이 새로움으로 무장한 창조적인 사진작품을 만들어낸다. 지난 20여 년간 상업지면과 순수사진의 경계를 오가며 왕성한 활동을 해 온 그에 대한 언급을 몇 줄로 설명하기란 어렵다. 그의 이름 앞에는 늘 ‘국내 최정상의 포토그래퍼’라는 화려한 수식어가 함께 불리면서 각종 영화포스터와 유명 매거진의 화보, CF, 다양한 장르의 시각매체 등에서 작업 해왔다. 십 수 년 간 한결같이 대중의 사랑과 관심을 받아온 그의 작품이 지닌 특징은 '자연스러운 언어'가 녹아든 작업이란 것이다. 사진에 대한, 피사체에 대한 그만의 진정성 있는 철학도 그가 나타내는 이 언어의 연장선이다. 권영호는 “사진은 피사체를 찍는 것이 아니라 피사체를 통해 내면의 움직임을 담는 것”이라고 말한다. 이렇듯 그 자신만의 독창적인 시각적 언어를 지속적으로 유지하고자 했다.
2GIL29 GALLERY에서 선보이는 권영호의 이번 전시에 소개되는 새로운 작품들은 개인의 일기와도 같은 형식으로 ‘UNEXPECTED’란 전시 타이틀을 달고 있다. 피사체의 본질에 몰입하고 사진 그 이상의 것을 바라보며 탐구하는 권영호의 감각적인 시선으로 펼쳐진 작업들은 모두 작가 개인의 감정과 시간의 흐름에 따른 예기치 못한 기록의 산물들이라 할 수 있다. 1839년 8월 프랑스 정부가 공식적으로 세계 최초로 카메라의 발명을 공표한 이후, 178년이란 길지 않은 역사 속에서 사진은 폭발적 발전을 거듭해왔다. 이제 사진이 단순한 기술의 차원을 넘어 예술세계에 확고히 자리 잡았으며 현재 사진 매체는 다른 어떤 장르보다도 현대미술의 중심적 자리를 차지하고 있음은 분명하다. 한국미술계에서는 다양한 작가들이 사진을 흥미롭게 다루면서 자신의 작업세계를 전개해나가고 있는데 그 중심에 작가 권영호를 주목한다. 이번 전시는 관람자들에게 마치 작가의 시각 일기를 엿보는 듯한 경험을 제공해줄 것이다. 빠르게 변화하는 세상 속에서 다양성과 풍요로움을 매순간 놓치지 않으려고 노력하는 그의 시선에 의해 포착된 장면들은 일상의 평범함 속에서 길어 올린 예기치 못한 낯선 아름다움이다. 사진은 늘 익숙한 풍경을 또는 사물을 정직하게 보여주는 재현적 수단임에도 불구하고 좋은 사진에서 얻어지는 생경함, 당연함을 역행하는 낯선풍경들이 지닌 힘을 권영호의 사진은 여실히 보여준다. 이 순간 상업과 예술의 경계를 넘나드는 사진작가 권영호의 작품세계를 마주하면서 난해하고 현학적인 사진이 아닌 작가 자신이 접한 그 순간을 겸허히 받아들이려는 그의 진중한 삶이 오롯이 녹아 스며있는 그 자신을 바라보게 된다. 다시 말하면 그가 담은 사진이 사적인 의미를 담고 있다해도 깊은 감동을 주는 예술작품으로 명확하게 다가오는 이유는 또 다시 보고 싶고 가까이 다가서게 만드는 묘한 매력을 지니고 있기 때문이다.
Unexpected
2GIL29 Gallery presents Unexpected from October 21 through November 30, 2017, a solo show of Youngho Kwon (b. 1968), one of the key artists in the Korean photography scene. After graduating from Chung-Ang University with a diploma in photography, he has constantly produced creative photographic works with which he garnered at his young age of 29 the Fashion Journalist Prize, the most prestigious award in the Korean fashion world. Only a few words are not enough to describe this photographer who has been active for 20 years, crossing the boundaries between commercial and artistic photography. Known as one of Korea’s top photographers for years, he has worked in a wide variety of visual mediums such as film posters, pictures for noted magazines, and commercial films. A hallmark of his works is that they are couched in “a natural language.” His veritable philosophy on photography and his subjects is an extension of this language he employs for artistic representation. He stated, “Photography is not to take pictures of subjects but to hold inner movements through such subjects.” As such, he has intended to maintain his own distinctive visual idioms.
His new pieces on display at this exhibition are in the form of a personal diary. He has been immersed in the nature of his photographic subjects and explored something more than photography. His works couched in his sensuous idioms can be thought of as products of unexpected records depending on the flow of his emotion and time. Since the invention of the camera was announced in 1839 at the French Academy of Sciences for the first time in the world, photography has grown explosively. Photography is now firmly established as a major art genre, more obviously taking up the heart of contemporary art than any other genre.
In the Korean contemporary art scene, many artists have built up their own art world while addressing the medium of photography with great interest. Kwon has drawn attention at the center of this tendency. This exhibition will serve as an opportunity for viewers to catch a glimpse of his visual diary. He has made efforts not to miss any moment of diversity and abundance in this rapidly changing world. The scenes he has captured with such efforts bring about unexpected, unfamiliar beauty springing from the ordinary in everyday life. Kwon’s pictures clearly demonstrate the force awkward, unfamiliar scenes may retain even though photography is a representational means to display familiar scenes and objects.
While facing the world of photographer Youngho Kwon who has struggled to move beyond the boundaries between commerce and art, we discover his new photographs into which his sedate life filters, not any abstruse, pedantic pictures. That is, we are deeply touched by his photographs – although they convey some private meaning – because they are quite beguiling and draw us to them.

권영호는 중앙대학교 사진학과를 졸업하고 십 수 년간 우리 시대의 감각적이고도 감성적인 이미지들을 담아내고 있는 국내 최정상 포토그래퍼다. 그는 어떤 공간이든 어떤 사람이든 특유의 시선으로 그만의 이야기를 담아낸다. 단지 모습만이 아니라, 기분과 감정까지도 섬세하게 보여주는 그의 사진. 그것이 사람들이 오랜 시간 동안 그의 사진을 사랑해온 이유일 것이다. 에스케이텔레콤 TTL의 광고비주얼을 맡아 촬영하며 광고 사진의 새로운 트렌드를 만들어 냈다고 평가 받는다. [엽기적인 그녀] [미녀는 괴로워] [잠복근무] [품행제로] 등의 감각적이고 거친 질감의 사진부터, [허브] [후아유] [데이지] 같은 감성적인 사진을 넘나드는 영화포스터 작업으로 잘 알려져 있다. 1998년 패션 저널리스트상인 올해의 패션사진 기자상을 역대 최연소로 수상하였으며, 현재 이화여자대학교 패션디자인과에 출강하고 있다. 원빈, 이효리, 권상우 사진집을 출간하였다.
Youngho Kwon
Youngho Kwon, majored in photography at the ChungAng University, is a well-known photographer for taking pictures along with artistic and touching images. No matter which spaces and people are taken, he translates his story with his unique view into every piece of his work. His photos which detail feeling and emotions as well as a figure are the reason why people have loved for a long time. Having succeeded with the SK advertisement, TTL, he received a favorable evaluation for creating new trend of a commercial picture. From the artistic and rough technique of ‘My Sassy Girl’, ‘200 Pounds Beauty’, ‘She’s On Duty’, and ‘No Manners’ to sentimental works such as ‘Herb, 2007’, ‘Who Are U?,2002’, and ‘Daisy, 2006’, they are well-known works of him. Youngho Kwon, the youngest ever winner of the Fashion Journalist prize in 1998, is currently working as an adjunct professor at Ewha Womans Universty. He has also published the photograph collection of Bin Won, Hyori Lee and Sangwoo Kwon.
