2GIL29 GALLERY will present Suhwadang Sunho Choi’s <SUHWADANGDANG> from Dec.8, 2018 to Dec.20, 2018 at 2GIL29 GALLERY. Sunho Choi began to use a penname Suhwadang after a fateful encounter on a fine day of Spring in 1994, when Cornelian cherry flowers splendidly bloomed, feeling destiny in his bone. “空山無人 水流花開 (GongSanMuin SuRyuHwaGae), Water runs and flowers bloom even in deserted mountain.” He named SuHwa after a verse in the poem of Wang Yu taking two letters from it. 

While completing his B.A. and M.A, in Seoul national university, he was engrossed in Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasty’s ink wash painting, Sumukhwa in Korean, and landscape paintining of Joseon. He was not only distracted by an allure of them but also consistently putting effort to embody genuine aesthetic sense of Korea in his work. While he has delivered a pure and warm quality in color of Joseon through his work, he has grown old enough to say that he got to realize that “The masterpieces of Chusa and Kyomjae is a fruit of anguish gained from an effort to live up to their lives as an artist.” 

He confesses that he goes his own way with desperate endeavor keeping “‘A rapicality’ at present will be ‘a classic’ tomorrow” in his mind as a motto living up to his fate as an artist seeking for an eternal beauty. <SUHWADANGDANG>is a tangible manifestation of his intellectual exploration. An etching of Cézanne, an engraving of Delacroix, a lamp of Bauhaus, Chusa Gim Jeong-hui’s calligraphy, Kyomjae Jeong Seon’s landscape painting, Danwon Kim Hong-do’s fourfolded and eight-folded folding screen with painting of flowers and birds on it, and the antique collections including remarkable masterpieces of earthenware from three kingdom period, and Dawan porcelain from Song dynasty, and so on which surpass a regional and time limit. His collections accumulated throughout over 30years are not just massive in quantity but also credible evidence showing his unparalleled discernment in art. His collections from the modern time and the present range an oil painting of Na Hyeseok, who is a key figure with regard to a female artist in the modern era, the late Moon Shin’s sculpture, Braun radio, Atom toy, Savoy vase, and Serge Bloch’s art work, and they are considerably fascinating enough to attract attention of collectors. 

2GIL29 GALLERY<이길이구 갤러리>에서는 2018년 12월 8일부터 12월 20일까지 화가 수화당 최선호 작가의 <수 화당당전水花堂堂展>을 선보인다. 수화당은 최선호 작가의 호이다. 1994 년 산수유 꽃이 흐드러지게 피던 봄, 땅의 인연을 느꼈던 운명적인 그날에 맞이한 최선호 작가의 호는 수화당. 수화는 “空山無人 水流花開 (공산무인 수류화개), 빈 산에 사람은 없으나 물은 흐르고 꽃은 핀다” 왕유의 시 구절, 수류화개 중 두 글자를 따왔다. 

서울대학교와 동대학원에서 동양화를 수학하며, 송원명청(宋元明淸)의 수묵화와 조선의 산수화에 푹 빠져 들었던 작가는, 단순히 수묵화의 매력에 미혹되지 않고, 그 안에 한국적 미감을 담기 위해 차분하게 정진해왔다. 동양의 미를 서구적 형식 속에 녹여내며 조선 색의 순수와 정감에 대해서 얘기해왔던 작가는 이제 “조선후기의 서화가 추사 김정희(1786-1856)와 조선후기의 화가 정선 겸재(1676-1759)의 명작은 남다른 시각과 남다르게 살아간 인간적 고뇌가 만들어낸 피눈물의 산물이었다는 것을 알게 되었다” 고 말하는 나이가 되었다.  

“오늘의 ‘급진(急進)‘은 내일의 ’고전(古典)‘이다.”를 마음에 품고 간절한 노력과 정신으로 예술가의 길을 간다고 고백했 던 작가는 오늘도 영원한 미를 대한 해답을 쫓으며, 화가로서의 숙명을 살아내고 있다. <수화당당전>은 최선호 작가의 지적 탐구의 물질적 현현이다. 세잔의 에칭과 들라크루아의 판화, 바우하우스 조명, 추사 김정희의 붓글씨, 겸재 산수화, 단원 화조화4폭 및 8폭 병풍 그리고 시대와 지역을 넘나드는 고미술품으로 삼국시대 토기, 송대 다완 백자 등 동.서양의 주요한 시대의 역작을 아우르며 집적된 방대한 컬렉션은 30여년에 걸친 그의 탐미 정신과 예술적 안목이 오롯이 드러낸다. 근.현대의 수집품도 상당하여 근대 여성 화단의 주요인물 나혜석의 유화, 문신의 조각 작품에 미치며, 브라운 진공관 라디오 아톰 토이, 사보이베이스, 세르쥬 블록의 작품은 컬렉터들의 흥미를 끌기 충분하다. 

작가의 탁월한 예술적 안목이 담겨 있는 이 컬렉션들은 작가의 작품의 영감의 원천, 창조의 열쇠가 되기도 하였다. 동서양을 넘나드는 작가의 세련되고 현대적이면서 깊고 단아한 멋을 연출 할 수 있었던 에너지가 되기도 하였다. 작가의 심미안으로 모은 수집품들은 색채 조형과 구성, 리듬까지 우리에게 전해지는 아름다움은 경이롭기까지 하다. 서양적 미니멀리즘 부터 동양적 깊이의 미감의 작품까지 끝임없이 도전하며 스펙트럼이 넓은 작품 세계를 보여주었던 최선호 작가의 은밀한 흔적을 따라가 볼 수 있는 특별한 기회임에 동시에 국내에서 쉽게 접할 수 없는 다양한 장르의 작품도 감상할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.
