아라리오갤러리는 2019년 여름 전시로 그룹전 <척추를 더듬는 떨림>을 선보인다. 전시에 참여한 솔 칼레로, 카시아 푸다코브스키, 페트릿 할릴라이, 조라 만은 독일 베를린과 국제무대에서 활동하고 있는 작가이다.
한국에서는 처음으로 소개하는 이 작가들은 공동체에 대한 개념, 사회적 구조를 과거의 중요한 역사적 맥락, 재구성된 공간, 망각의 상태와 같은 상황을 보여주는 것을 통해 각자만의 독특한 작업세계로 풀어낸다. 이번 전시에서는 수년간의 작품활동으로 다져진 이들의 작업을 예술가의 창조적 충동, 예상치 못했던 재료의 활용, 그리고 국제적 관점으로 보여줄 예정이다.

솔 칼레로(b.1982, 카라카스, 베네주엘라)는 건축의 구조적 요소를 회화와 설치에 활용한 작업을 한다. 전시된 <남쪽의 학교>는 런던에 있는 스튜디오 볼테르의 건축양식에 대한 비평적 사유에서부터 시작한 작업이다. 건축물은 한 단체가 설립된 것을 물리적으로 상징하며 그것이 형성하는 권력구조의 과정을 추적해 볼 수 있는 매개체이다. 작가의 출생지인 남미의 시각문화를 기반으로 스튜디오 볼테르의 빅토리아 식 건축양식을 재해석한 이 작업은 사회가 특정 문화를 차용해 권력의 지배구조를 형성할 수 있다는 과정을 탐구한다.

카시아 푸다코브스키(b.1985, 런던)는 서로 연관성이 없어 보이는 패널들을 연결시키는 <지속성없는없음> 시리즈를 전시한다. 작가는 패널을 이루는 조각들을 통해 의도적으로 연속성이 없어 보이는 이미지들을 병치시키고, 각 패널들이 임의로 해체되고 매번 새롭게 조합될 수 있게 함으로써, 관객의 일상적 범주화와 정의내림을 의도적으로 부정한다. 확대되거나 축소되어 어딘지 모르게 익숙한 패널의 오브제들은 관객이 쉽게 그들만의 내러티브블 만들어낼 수 있게 하며, 극단적으로 역설적인 이미지들은 되려 코믹하게 읽히기도 한다. 이번 전시를 위해 제작된 4점의 신작은 <지속성없는없음> 시리즈 안에서도 <범죄를 찾는 처벌>이라는 제목으로 소개된다. 작가는 비어있는 대합실의 의자, 욕실 커튼에 갇힌 새우와 같은 설치물을 제작함으로써 공동체의 시민으로서 요구 받는 책임과 개인의 자유가 통제, 감시되는 부조리한 사회구조에 주목한다.

페트릿 할릴라이(b.1986, 스케렌데라이-코소보)는 2015년부터 작업해온 <철자법 책> 시리즈를 소개한다. 작가는 그의 고향이자 비극적 전쟁의 역사를 가지고 있는 코소보의 한 학교 책상에 그려진 낙서들을 대형 설치물로 만들어낸다. 사소하게 잊혀지는 학생들의 낙서를 통해 우리 개인의 기억이 상실되거나 희미해지는 것을, 나아가 한 사회의 역사가 왜곡되어 기록되는 것을 보존하는 행위라고도 읽을 수 있는 그의 작업은 어떻게 해도 부정할 수 없는 공동의 역사가 존재한다고 말한다. 작가는 <철자법 책> 조각 시리즈 외에도 이번 전시를 위해 작가의 중요한 작업적 영감이 되는 새 소리를 이용한 사운드 현장설치 작품도 설치했다.

조라 만(b.1979, 암스테르담)은 아프리카에서 유년기를 보낸 경험을 토대로 한 작품 <코스모파기>를 전시한다. 해양보호 활동에도 참여한 적이 있는 작가는 케냐의 해변과 수로에 버려진 플라스틱 슬리퍼들을 재활용해 커튼을 만들었다. 인도양의 가장 큰 오염원이기도 한 슬리퍼들은 인류의 욕망이 되돌릴 수 없는 환경파괴를 초래할 수 있다는 공동체적 인식을 재고한다. 함께 전시된 방패 시리즈는 토착민족의 사이키델릭하고 장식적인 패턴 이면의 초자연적이고 영적인 경험의 존재를 연출한다.
이번 전시의 제목은 참여작가 푸다코브스키의 작업적 경험의 일화에서 착안하였다. 작가가 느꼈던 떨림은 유령을 본 것 같은 체험에서 비롯한다. 그가 맞닥트린 ‘유령’은 작가가 본 것 중에서도 가장 무시무시한 이미지였는데, 작가는 결국 그 두려움에 매료되고 말았다고 한다. 그가 말하는 떨림은 유령이라는 초자연적인 현상 그 자체가 아닌, 우리도 모르게 일상을 잠식해오는 그 무언가의 존재를 깨달았을 때 등골이 오싹해지는 순간을 의미심장하게 이야기 하고 있는 것만 같다.
참여 작가들은 하나로 규합할 수 없는 여러 가지 미술의 레퍼런스의 영향을 동시에 받으면서 다양한 사회의 정체성과 위계의 정치학에 얽혀있는 모습을 예상치 못했던 감각으로 풀어낸다. 봐서는 안될 것을 본, 보고 싶지 않은 것을 목격한, 보기 전의 상태로 돌아갈 수 없는 상황의 두려움을 알고 있는 작가들은, 마치 유령처럼 일상에 균열을 주는 미지의 경험으로 우리를 유인한다. 뜨거운 태양과 칠흑 같은 어둠이 공존하는 여름, 우리 삶에 출현할 떨림을 이번 전시를 통해 경험해 보길 바란다.
