조각공원 레드존 Red Zone in Sculpture Park

올림픽조각공원은 88서울올림픽을 기념하여 동서화합과 문화올림픽의 일환으로 개최된“ 세계현대미술제”(1987~88)를 통해 조성되었다. 이 미술제의 일부로 기획된“ 국제야외조각심포지엄 1, 2”와 “국제야외조각초대전” 개최를 계기로, 동서 강대국을 비롯하여 아시아, 아프리카, 남미 등 전세계 66개국의 대표 조각가 155명의 작품이 설치되었다. 또한, 올림픽 10주년 야외조각 심포지엄(1998)을 통해서 한국작가 12명의 작품이 설치되는 등, 총 200여점의 야외 조각 작품을 보유하고 있는 올림픽조각공원은 작품 수나 규모에 있어 명실공이 세계 최고의 야외조각공원 중 하나라 할 수 있다.

이번, 상설 전시 및 영상 아카이브 전시는 “정신적인 몸”이라는 부제로 진행된다. 

전시는 올림픽공원 조성 당시 설치된 작품들, 1998년 올림픽 10주년 심포지엄을 통해 설치되거나 그 이후에 기증받은 작품들 중에서 신체를 주제로 제작된 작품들로 재구성하였다. 영상 아카이브 전시를 위해서는, 5개의 존으로 구성된 올림픽조각공원 작품들 중 소마미술관 주변인 레드존 77점을 대상으로 신체성이 부각된 24점을 선정하였다.

국민체육진흥공단에서 운영하는 소마미술관은 몸을 주제로 한 기획 전시를 꾸준히 개최하고 있으며, 앞으로도 신체성과 스포츠의 역동성을 주제로 한 전시 및 문화기획을 통해 관람객들에게 참신한 콘텐츠를 지속적으로 소개하고자 한다.

전시의 부제를“ 정신적인 몸” 으로 한 것은 단순한 물리력의 동력이 아닌, 정신을 담는 그릇인 동시에 정신성을 구현하는 주체로서의 몸의 중요성을 환기시키기 위함이다.

Olympic Sculpture Park was created through the World Contemporary Art Festival (1987-88) which was held as part of the Cultural Olympics to mark the Seoul Olympics and facilitate harmony between the East and the West. With the International Sculpture Symposium 1 and 2 and the Open-Air Sculpture Invitational Exhibition planned as part of this art festival, works

by 155 sculptors from 66 countries around the world including those in Asia, Africa, and the Americas were set in this sculpture park. 12 works by Korean sculptors were also installed for the Open-Air Sculpture Symposium (1998) to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Seoul Olympics. In terms of scale and the number of works, Olympic Park housing 200 outdoor sculptures is one of the best sculpture parks in the world in deed as well as in name.

Titled The Spiritual Body , this permanent sculpture exhibition and video archival exhibition features works that were installed when the park was first created as well as pieces produced on the subject of the body. In addition, there are works that were displayed at the 10th anniversary symposium in 1998 along with artworks that have been donated since then. A total of 24 pieces giving prominence to physicality have been selected for the video archival exhibition from among the 77 works on show in the red zone around the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (SOMA).

Run by the Seoul Olympic Sports Promotion Foundation, SOMA has consistently unveiled a number of exhibitions on the subject of the body. The museum intends to bring new exhibit content to viewers through exhibitions pertaining to the physicality and dynamism of sports. The exhibit title The Spiritual Body has been devised to call attention to the importance of the body as a receptacle for the spirit and a subject that embodies spirituality instead of as something that is merely the source of physical power.
