바라캇 컨템포러리는 2020년 8월 5일(수)부터 9월 27일(일)까지 하산 하자즈의 개인전 A Taste of Things to Come을 선보입니다. 하산 하자즈는 1961년 모로코 라라슈에서 태어나 십 대 시절 가족과 함께 영국으로 이주한 이후, 사진을 주요 매체로 모로코와 영국을 오가며 활동하는 작가입니다. A Taste of Things to Come은 현재 인류가 맞이한 전 세계적인 변화의 시점에서 미래를 건설적이고 긍정적인 관점으로 바라보고, 서로를 보살피며 나아가자는 하산의 포용적인 세계관이 잘 드러나는 메시지입니다. 작가는 다양한 문화적 취향을 함께 공유하고 소통하는 것의 중요성을 그의 작품 세계를 통해 전달하고자 합니다.

 

하산의 사진에는 북아프리카의 강렬하고 리드미컬한 색채와 패턴, 개성 있는 포즈를 취하고 있는 인물들이 등장합니다. 작가는 인물 사진에 음료, 통조림 캔, 장난감, 재활용 타이어, 성냥갑 등 모로코에서 소비되는 상품 오브제를 결합한 독창적인 프레임을 제작합니다. 이는 단순한 장식이 아닌 모로코의 전통적인 모자이크 패턴과 타일을 하산의 관점으로 재해석 작품으로, 동시대 문화의 복합성을 잘 드러냅니다. 이러한 그의 작업 세계는 그가 1970-80년대 거대한 코스모폴리탄 도시였던 영국에서 생활하면서 자연스럽게 접하게 된 스트리트 음악과 패션, 인테리어 디자인 등 다문화적 예술 영역에서의 경험과 북아프리카의 강렬한 시각적 요소가 응축된 결과물입니다. 반항적이고 창조적인 정신이 깃든 하산의 작품 세계는 우리를 다채롭고 유쾌한 세계로 인도할 것입니다.

 

 이번 전시에는 <나의 록스타 My Rockstars>, <케쉬 엔젤스 Kesh Angeles>, <다카 마라키아 Dakka Marrakchia>, <다리 Legs> 등 하산의 대표 사진 연작들과 더불어 영상 작품 <나의 록스타 실험 영상 II My Rockstars Experimental II>을 선보입니다. 또한 모로코에 있는 그의 부티크 공간을 구현하면서 패션, 디자인, 예술의 경계를 넘나드는 하산의 다양한 작업 세계를 한자리에서 살펴볼 수 있는 의미 있는 시간이 될 것입니다.

 

하산 하자즈의 국내 첫 개인전 A Taste of Things to Come에 많은 관심과 성원 바랍니다.

코로나19 확산 방지를 위해 별도의 오프닝 행사는 진행하지 않습니다.

Barakat Contemporary presents a solo exhibition of the artist Hassan Hajjaj, A Taste of Things to Come, from August 5 to September 27, 2020. Hassan Hajjaj moved to England with his family at a young age and is an artist who lives and works in Morocco and England, using photography as his main medium. The title of this exhibition, A Taste of Things to Come, is a message that reveals an embracing worldview that looks at the future through a constructive and positive perspective, taking care of one another and moving forwards at a time when humans are faced with global change. Through his body of work, the artist seeks to convey the importance of sharing the various cultural tastes of the world in which we live and communicate with each other.

 

Hajjaj’s work reflects the powerful, rhythmic colors, patterns, and unique poses of North Africa. The artist reveals the hybridity of contemporary culture by creating unique frames that incorporate bottles, cans, toys, recycled tires, and matchboxes. This is not merely decorative, but a reinterpretation of Morocco’s traditional mosaic patterns and tiles from Hajjaj’s point of view, revealing the complexities of contemporary culture. Hassan’s body of work is the result of his experiences in multicultural fields of art including street music, fashion and interior design, naturally encountered while living in huge, cosmopolitan London in the 1970s and 1980s, together with North Africa’s intense visual elements. Hajjaj’s work, with its rebellious and creative spirit, will guide us to a vibrant and playful world. This exhibition will feature a series of photographs from the artist’s representative series, including My Rockstars, Kesh Angels, Dakka Marrakchia, Legs, as well as the video work My Rockstars Experimental II. In addition, it will be an important occasion to explore Hajjaj’s diverse fields of work, which traverse the boundaries of fashion, design, and art, at the same time as embodying his boutique space in Morocco.

하산 하자즈(b.1961)는 모로코 북부의 도시 라라슈에서 태어나 현재 모로코와 영국을 중심으로 활동하고 있습니다. 하산은 런던 헤이워드 갤러리, 파리 유럽 사진미술관, 런던 서머싯 하우스, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA), 영국 박물관, 샌프란시스코 드영 미술관, 파리 퐁피두 현대 미술관, 로마 국립 21세기 미술관(MAXXI) 등에서 다수의 개인전과 단체전을 가졌습니다. 그의 작품은 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관, 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 미술관, 구겐하임 아부다비, 브루클린 미술관, 영국 박물관 등 유수한 기관에 소장되어 있습니다.

 

Hassan Hajjaj (b. 1961) was born in the northern Moroccan city of Larache and works and lives in Morocco and England. Hajjaj’s numerous solo and group exhibitions include those at the Hayward Gallery, London, Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, Somerset House, London, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the British Museum, London, the de Young Museum, San Francisco, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and National Museum of the 21st Century (MAXXI), Rome. His work has been collected by a number of leading institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi, Brooklyn Museum, and the British Museum.
