전시내용
가나아트 사운즈는 영상 제작자이자 큐레이터인 맷 블랙 (Matt Black)과의 협업을 통해 시카고를 기반으로 활동하는 타이슨 리더(Tyson Reeder, 1974-)의 개인전 《29 Palms》를 개최한다. 그의 형이자 작가인 스캇 리더(Scott Reeder, 1970-)와 함께 타이슨은 회화와 퍼포먼스 작업은 물론 전시 및 아트페어 기획에도 참여하는 등 방대한 활동을 전개해왔다. 주로 야외에서 직접 풍경을 보고 그리는 앙플레네르(En Plein Air) 기법을 사용하는 작가는 패션 브랜드 셀린느(Celine)와의 협업으로 환상적인 형태의 자연과 도시 풍경이 그려진 아이템을 선보이며 이름을 알렸다. 이번 전시는 타이슨 리더의 아시아 첫 개인전일 뿐 아니라, 본 전시를 위해 제작된 신작 12점을 공개하는 자리인지라 더욱 기대가 크다.
타이슨 리더는 연필이나 색연필, 아크릴 물감을 사용해 나무와 산, 수풀과 아스팔트 도로가 어우러진 열대지방의 도시 풍경에 상상력을 더한 유토피아적인 화풍을 선보인다. 그의 작업은 에드 루샤(Ed Ruscha, 1937-)의 로스앤젤레스 일대의 야자수 사진 모음집 『A Few Palm Trees』와 독일 화가 지그마르 폴케(Sigma Polke, 1941-2010)가 전통적인 회화 기법과 팝아트식 망점을 한데 겹쳐 구축한 ‘레이어 회화’에서 영향을 받았다. 이에 영향을 받아 타이슨은 대중적인 야자수의 이미지를 반복적으로 차용하되, 가벼운 붓 터치로 캔버스에 옅게 스며들게 한 흐릿한 색채와 삐뚤삐뚤한 연필 선들의 중첩 등으로 혼성적인 미술 방식을 전개함으로써 익숙한 풍경을 낯설고 공허하게 보이게 한다.
전시명에서 유추할 수 있듯, 본 전시에서는 타이슨 리더가 2000년대 초반부터 다양한 퍼포먼스와 프로젝트를 전개해온 캘리포니아주 조슈아 트리 국립공원의 초입에 위치한 투웬티나인 팜스(Twentynine Palms)라는 도시를 구현한 작품들이 전시된다. 작가는 앙리 마티스(Henri Matisse, 1869-1954)나 클로드 모네(Claude Monet, 1840-1926)와 같이 시시각각으로 변화하는 빛의 색채나 색조의 순간적 효과를 이용하여 눈에 보이는 풍경을 정확하고 객관적으로 기록한다. 특히 그가 동경해온 동명의 음악가 및 밴드의 이름에서 영감을 받아 명명한 <Zoogz Rift Series>(2021)와 <Smog Series>(2021)를 통해 특정한 장소에서 벌어지는 새벽, 여명, 황혼, 밤과 같은 시간대의 변화에 주목한다. 이에 한 화면 내에서 다른 시간대가 교차하는 찰나를 볼 수 있으며, 나아가 해가 지거나 뜰 때의 어스름한 빛이 스며들어 자연과 어우러진 고요한 도시 경관은 자유롭게 여행할 수 있었던 지난날에 대한 향수와 원더러스트(wanderlust)를 전달한다.
이번 전시는 열대 이미지의 유토피아적인 클리셰(clichés)를 새롭게 풀어낸 작가의 신작을 감상할 수 있는 기회인 동시에, 궁극적으로는 팬데믹 시대에 위로의 기회를 제공하고자 하는 타이슨 리더의 숨겨둔 의도를 경험할 수 있는 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다. 그의 작품은 모든 사람들이 떠나가 비워진 도시 풍경에 대한 작가의 시선과 한편으로는 종말 이후의 적막한 장면을 연상시키는 신비스럽고 몽롱한 분위기가 특징이다. 이렇게 익숙한 풍경을 초현실적으로 재해석하는 작가의 시선은 공허함을 안고 현 시대를 살아가고 있는 우리들의 삶에 신선한 새벽 공기와 같은 새로움을 불어넣어 준다. 따라서, 원래의 일상으로 돌아가고자 하는 소망을 담은 신작이 공개되는 이번 전시가 관람객들에게 만연한 우울감이나 공허함을 문화적인 신선함으로 치유하는 시간이 되길 희망한다.
