가나아트 사운즈는 전통적인 정물화를 현대적으로 재해석하여 선보이는 니콜 다이어(Nicole Dyer b. 1991-)의 개인전 《I HAVE IT ALL》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 니콜 다이어의 국내 첫 개인전으로서, 그리고 아시아 첫 개인전으로 의미가 크다. 니콜 다이어는 2013년 메릴랜드 예술대학(MICA)을 졸업하고, 약 12년간 볼티모어를 기반으로 활동하다 최근 뉴욕으로 거주지를 옮겨 활동을 지속하고 있다. 2020년 아트시(Artsy)는 니콜 다이어를 정물화를 재해석하는 주요 현대 미술가 중 한 명으로 선정한 바 있으며, 주목받는 신진작가인 다이어는 올해 상반기에만 시카고, 뉴욕, 샌프란시스코 등에서 개최된 다수의 전시에 참여하며 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 최근 그는 소셜 미디어, 웹사이트 등을 통한 정보의 과잉 소비와 대중문화 등을 탐구한 결과를 정물화 기법으로 구현하고 있다. 이로써 디지털 사회와 대중소비사회 문화의 역기능을 추적하는 그의 근작이 이번 개인전을 통해 국내 최초 공개된다.

작가가 선정한 이번 전시 제목 《I HAVE IT ALL》은 그의 작품세계를 단적으로 설명해준다. 현대인들은 디지털 매체를 통해 물질도 관계도 제약없이 누린다. 자유재로 쇼핑하기는 물론 전 세계 사람들과의 관계를 맺으며 그야말로 ‘HAVE IT ALL’, 모든 걸 가질 수 있다. 그러나 오프라인에선 광고의 홍수 속 무분별한 과소비와 지나친 관심의 구걸 및 소통의 부재를 경험하기 마련인데, 작가는 이와 같은 현실의 양가성을 화폭에 담는다. 다이어의 작품에는 패스트푸드, 고칼로리의 간식, 건강식품, 약, 핸드폰, 책, 노트북, 주변 친구들 등 랜덤한 사물과 인물이 한가득 등장한다. 저마다 독창적인 구도로 배치된 요소들은 시각적인 즐거움을 주는 동시에 그 잡다함으로 어지러움을 유발하기도 한다. 바로 그 지점에서 작가는 상품과 관계가 넘쳐나는 화려한 사회 이면에 자리한 신체와 정신 건강의 문제를 다룬다.

정물로 인생의 문제를 표현하는 전통은 17세기 네덜란드 바니타스(Vanitas) 회화에서 유래한다. 진기한 과일, 음식, 유리잔, 꽃 등을 해골, 촛불 등과 함께 한 화면에 배치하는 바니타스는 인생무상을 의미하며, 지금-여기 인간에게 만족감을 주는 모든 것이 결국엔 죽음으로 사라져버린다는 메시지를 담고 있다. 여행 중 우연히 마주친 바니타스 회화에 매료된 니콜 다이어는 이를 현대적인 언어로 차용해 몇 세기 전 사람들이 겪었던 과욕과 과용의 문제가 오늘도 변함없이 이어지고 있음을 말한다. 예컨대 <I Have It All but I Still Want More>(2019)은 제목에서부터 그러한 작가의 의도가 표현되고 있다. 다양한 합성재료를 혼합해 만든, 마치 과자 같은 테두리 안에 들어찬 사물들은 하나같이 먹음직하고 보암직하다. 그러나 하나씩 떼어 보면 잠깐의 만족만 줄 뿐 결코 인간에 이롭지 못한 것들이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그림 속 손들은 이것도 저것도 탐하는데, 이는 끝내 만족함은 없으리라는 적막한 예감을 지시한다. <My Pantry>(2018), <Pearl’s Room>(2019) 역시 이와 같은 주제의식을 공유한다. 

다이어의 작품에서 특징적인 또 하나의 요소는 얼굴을 드러내지 않는 인물들이다. <Studio HH>(2017), <Mario Kondo>(2019), <Girl Talk>(2019) 등에 등장하는 인물들은 회화 속 공간을 함께 점유할 뿐 각자의 세상에 골몰한 모습이다. 하물며 <Girls Talk>를 제목으로 하고 있는 작품에서조차 인물들이 실제로 대화를 나누고 있다는 느낌을 받긴 어려운데, 이는 관람자로서는 그들의 시선이 어디를 향하고 있는지, 과연 서로를 향하고 있는지 도통 알 수가 없기 때문이다. 의도적으로 두상을 잘라내거나 등을 지고 있는 자세로 그려진 다이어의 인물들은 얼굴을 맞대고 있는 때조차 스마트폰 화면에 집중하는 모습으로 자주 나타난다. 오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 이곳에서도 흔히 만날 수 있는 그러한 풍경은 동시대인들이 호소하는 ‘군중 속 고독’을 현시한다.

니콜 다이어의 작품을 가득 메운 사물과 인물이 익숙하게 느껴지는 까닭은 그가 지금-여기를 충실하게 재현하기 때문일 것이다. 재기발랄한 색감과 조형성 속에 깊은 사유를 품은 다이어의 작품을 통해 혹시 오늘 우리도 너무 많은 것에 휩쓸려 균형을 잃고 사는 것은 아닌지 되돌아보는 계기가 마련되기를 기대한다.
