가나아트 한남은 영상 제작자이자 큐레이터인 맷 블랙(Matt Black)과의 협업을 통해 켈티 페리스 (Keltie Ferris, b. 1977)의 국내 첫번째 개인전 《N(((o)))W》를 개최한다. 2006년 뉴욕에 자리를 잡고 본격적인 작업활동을 시작한 켈티 페리스는 주로 오일, 스프레이 페인트 및 파스텔로 그린 미래지향적이고 기하학적인 패턴의 대형 작품들로 알려졌다. 그는 화면구성에 대한 지속적인 탐구와 디지털화면을 연상시키는 화려한 색을 통해 빛이 불안정하게 움직이는 듯한 공간을 이끌어내며, 이를 통해 Jacob Javits Fellowship과 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant에 선정되는 등 그 작품성을 인정받은 바 있다. 이에 가나아트는 맷 블랙(Matt Black)과 공동으로 기획했던 리플렉션(Reflections) 그룹전시에서 2019년과 2020년, 2회에 걸쳐 소개된 켈티 페리스의 신작 7점을 본 전시에서 공개하며 그의 예술세계를 집중적으로 조망하고자 한다. 

예일대학교에서 신기하학적 개념주의를 이끈 작가이자 교수인 피터 할리(Peter Halley, b. 1953)의 영향을 받은 페리스는 서로 대비되는 형광색을 사용하며 캔버스 안에서 요동치는 에너지를 표현할 다양한 방법에 심취했다. 페리스는 그림을 작가의 감정과 자아를 표현하는 틀이기 이전에 그 자체를 살아 움직이는 배우(actor)로 받아들였으며 이는 작가의 강렬한 ‘감정’을 캔버스에 예술적으로 표현하고자 하는 추상표현주의의 주류 흐름과 차별화된다. 이와 같은 맥락으로 작가는 아르헨티나 쿠에바 데 마노스의 9,000년 전 동굴벽화에 찍힌 손자국을 연상시키는 바디 프린트 시리즈를 발표했다. 그는 2013년부터 전신과 얼굴에 물감을 바르고 직접 종이나 캔버스에 찍어내는 작업으로 미술계에 이름을 알리며 그림의 흔적 하나하나에 생기를 불어넣고자 했다. 또한 거리미술의 대표적인 도구인 스프레이 페인트를 캔버스에 뿌려 화면의 격렬한 운동감을 강조하기도 했다. 이처럼 극적이며 독창적인 과정을 통해 탄생한 선과 반복적인 패턴들은 그의 작품 전반에 드러나는 주요한 특징으로, 표현주의 추상의 아름다움을 보다 현대적인 방법으로 재해석했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 

본 전시 《N(((o)))W》에 출품된 신작들은 켈티 페리스가 만들어낸 통제할 수 없는 에너지와 강렬한 색상을 표현하면서도, 그의 또 다른 특징이라 볼 수 있는 픽셀화된 배경에서 대담한 변화를 보여주고 있다. 네덜란드 작가 피에트 몬드리안(Piet Mondrian, 1872-1944)의 구성주의와 프랭크 스텔라(Frank Stella, b.1936)의 기하학적인 미니멀아트에서 영감을 받았다고 언급한 켈티 페리스의 초기 이미지는 그리드를 연상시키는 체계적인 구성이 화면의 자유분방함과 공존하며 작품의 깊이감을 이끌어냈다. 이번 전시의 표제이자 출품작인 <N(((o)))W>(2021)는 이러한 수직과 수평의 면들이 층을 이루는 페리스의 특징적인 구성을 보여주고 있으며, 동시에 다른 출품작들을 통해 2018년 이후 시도하고 있는 그리드가 해체되는 작업을 같이 선보인다. 그는 최근 소리와 물결이 만들어내는 다양한 파동 및 형태를 연구하고 있는데 그 연장선으로 그려진 신작 <Woodstock>(2021)과 <L/e/a/n>(2021) 등은 픽셀화에서 탈피하여 무수한 곡선이 소용돌이치는 입체적인 화면으로 우리의 시선을 고정시킨다. 캔버스 위로 두 가지 대비되는 색상의 선들이 상호작용하고 밀도 높게 중첩되는 작업과정을 통해 틀에서 벗어난 해방감과 폭발적인 에너지를 강조하고 있는 것이다.

이렇듯 본 개인전은 질서와 무작위성이 그리드 위에 교묘하게 공존하던 시각적 프레임에서 더 나아가 화면의 자유로움을 새롭게 풀어낸 그의 신작을 감상할 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다. 본인만의 조형언어를 찾고자 끊임없이 시도하는 켈티 페리스의 신작에 드러난 화려한 색과 선에는 그가 불어넣은 생명력과 쾌활함이 가득하다. 또한 화면 위로 층층이 쌓인 유려한 선들과 그 뒤에 가득한 다른 곡선의 흔적들을 함께 살펴볼 수 있는 본 전시에서 현대인들이 삶의 여유와 작가가 느꼈던 시간의 흐름을 경험할 수 있길 기대한다.
