The Sharjah Art Foundation has announced an initial group of 23 artists participating in the Sharjah Biennial, set to open in the United Arab Emirates in March 2019. A complete lineup will be announced in the coming months.
The 14th edition, titled “Leaving the Echo Chamber,” explores migration, interpreted histories, and societal change in relation to rapid technological advancements and the information age. Zoe Butt (the artistic director of the Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), Omar Kholeif (the senior curator and director of global initiatives of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago), and Claire Tancons (a curator and art historian) will organize three individual exhibitions that bring together major commissions, large-scale public installations, performances, and films.
In a statement, Hoor Al Qasimi, the director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, said, “Contemporary life is dominated by competing information and fluctuating histories—a reality that raises important questions about the trajectory of contemporary art, as well as the conditions in which it is made. Butt, Kholeif, and Tancons bring incredibly different perspectives to these questions, and together represent the complexity of challenges faced by today’s artists and society as a whole.”
