이유진갤러리는 2013년 9월 13일(금)부터 10월 26일(토)까지 유럽에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 네 명의 작가들이 참여한 기획전을 개최한다. 이유진갤러리가 주최하고, 작가이자 기획자인 킴킴갤러리(김나영, 그레고리마스)가 기획한 본 전시는 스테판 에틀링거 Stefan Ettlinger, 소피 폰 헬러만 Sophie von Hellermann, 히르트 호이리스 Geert Goiris, 클라우스 베버 Klaus Weber의 작품들로 구성된다. 이번 전시를 위해 독일의 저명한 미술잡지 Texte zur Kunst의 에디터 클레멘스 크뤼멜은 위트 넘치는 전시 제목을 제공하였는데, 전시 제목인 “The Man Who Shot Ambivalence”는 1962년 존 포드 감독의 서부 영화 “The man who shot Liberty Valence(리버티 밸런스를 쏜 사나이)”에서 차용한 것으로 제목 자체에 양면적 감정(ambivalence)을 은유적으로 숨겨 놓았다. 사람 이름인 Liberty Valence가 ambivalence로 대체되는 탁월한 전환이자 유머러스한 순간은 두 단어 사이에 반대되는 감정의 병존을 가능하게 한다. 이런 상황은 어떤 방식으로 가정될 수 있을까? 

 

[sic]이란 표식은 어떠한 철자법의 오류나 틀린 맞춤법에 상관없이 원문 그대로 인용한 문구를 뜻한다. “This makes me [sic]”이란 문장에서처럼 언어적 유희는 때로 상황을 조롱하거나 말장난을 위한 장치가 된다. 다시 전시제목으로 돌아가 ambivalence로 대체된 영화 속 악명 높은 무법자 Liberty Valence를 생각해 보자. 그를 쏜 영웅은 옛 친구의 장례식에 와 자신의 도덕적 행위에 대한 불편한 진실을 이야기한다. 양면적 감정이 일으키는 이 불유쾌하고 미묘한 느낌은 이번 전시의 작가들이 공통적으로 견지하고 있는 감성이다. 

 

1958년 독일 뉘른베르그생, 스테판 에틀링거 Stefan Ettlinger는 회화, 음악, 영화에 걸친 다양한 활동을 보여주며 현재 뒤셀도르프에 거주하고 있다. 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미 Kunstakademie Düsseldorf 를 졸업 후, 뉴욕의 그린 나프탈리 갤러리 Greene Naftali Gallery, 아델슨 갤러리 Adelson Gallery, 바젤의 해리 젤위거 갤러리 Harry Zellweger, 뒤셀도르프의 쿤스트뮤지움 Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf과 갤러리 우르슐라 봘브롤 Galerie Ursula Walbröl, 퀼른의 야블롱카 갤러리 Jablonka Gallery 외 다수의 갤러리에서 전시를 가졌으며, 아티스트 퍼포먼스 그룹인 Anarchistische Gummizelle의 구성원이기도 하다. 얼핏 보기에 연관성 없어 보이는 여러 이미지들이 한 화면에 병치된 그의 작품은 TV 채널을 이리저리 돌리는 것 같은 느낌을 주는데, 신문 화면과 유사한 구조 속에서 각각의 이질적인 이야기와 이미지는 새로운 상관관계를 맺기도 한다. 사실 이런 관계 맺기는 우연적인 것이 아니며 에틀링거의 또다른 예술 분야인 음악을 믹싱하거나 영화를 만드는 방식과 유사한 방식에서 비롯된다.

 

소피 폰 헬러만 Sophie von Hellermann은 1975년 독일 뮌헨 출신이다. 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미 Kunstakademie Düsseldorf와 런던의 왕립미술학교 Royal College of Art를 졸업하였으며, 호비팝뮤지움 hobbypopMUSEUM의 창립 멤버이기도 하다. 런던의 사치 갤러리 Saatchi Gallery, 퀼른의 야블롱카 갤러리 Jablonka Gallery, 뉴욕의 그린 나프탈리 갤러리 Greene Naftali Gallery, 로스앤젤리스의 마크 폭스 갤러리 Marc Fox, 파리의 지슬랜느 위세노 Ghislaine Hussenot, 런던의 빌마 골드 Vilma Gold 등지에서 전시했고 현재 런던에 거주하고 있다. 소피 폰 헬러만은 복잡한 내러티브가 담긴 로맨틱한 느낌의 거대한 파스텔톤 캔버스 작업으로 잘 알려졌다. 코팅하지 않은 캔버스 위에 시원하게 흘리듯 안료로 채색해 나가는 기법을 통해 화면 속 대상이나 형태들은 마치 공기 중을 부유하듯 화면을 채운다. 작가의 관심사는 인간의 정신이 어떻게 작용하는가에 대한 것으로, 과거에 경험하거나 읽거나 본 것들이 어떤 이미지로 꿈속에 나타나는지에 관한 것이다. 

 

히르트 호이리스 Geert Goiris는 1971년생, 벨기에 보른헴 출신의 사진작가로 현재 앤트워프에서 살며 작업하고 있다. 역량있는 신진작가들을 소개하는 아트 바젤 스테이트먼트 Statements, 파리의 아트:컨셉 갤러리 Galerie Art:Concept, 벨기에 러

븐의 뮤지움 엠 Museum M 등지에서 작품을 선보였으며  화려한 수상경력을 보유하고 있는 그의 작품은 서구 다수의 미술관과 기관에 소장되어 있다. 작가는 정신적 외상을 뜻하는 ‘traumatic’이란 용어를 자주 사용하는데, 이는 불안정한 감각이나 심리적인 고통을 묘사하기 위함이라기보다는 독일어인 'Traum(꿈)’과 관련이 있다. 가혹할만치 사실적인 그의 사진들은 사람들이 일상에서 쉽게 경험하지 못하는 어떤 낯설음을 내포한다. 호이리스는 북극 스피츠베르겐과 핀란드의 숲, 유타의 소금사막, 남극의 얼음사막 등을 탐험하며 고독과 공허, 쇠퇴해가는 모습들을 불길한 느낌의 시적 이미지들로 창조한다. 고립된 영역들의 최단에서 작가는 지질학적 시간대와 대지 위에 존재하는 인간의 유한함과 덧없음에 대한 이상적인 표현들과 조우하기를 기다리며 그 풍경들을 응시한다.

 

1967년 독일 지그마링겐 출신의 클라우스 베버 Klaus Weber는 현재 베를린에서 거주하며 활동하고 있다. 그는 비엔나의 쎄세션 Secession in Vienna, 노팅햄 현대미술관 The Nottingham Contemporary과 런던의 헤이워드 갤러리 Hayward Gallery, 글라스고의 트랜스미션 갤러리Transmission Gallery, 함부르크 쿤스트페라인 Kunsterverein Hamburg, 뉴욕의 앤드류 크렙스 갤러리 Andrew Kreps Gallery 등에서 전시를 가졌다. 클라우스 베버의 작품은 우리가 현실이라 부르는 것과의 단절을 야기하는데, 작가는 그 과정에서 우리 내면에 견고히 자리하는 신념체계에 대해 질문을 던진다. 철학, 심리, 때로는 경제의 본질에 대한 사회적 물음은 베버 작품의 출발점이 된다. 방법론적으로 개념예술과 밀접한 관계를 맺는 그의 작품에서 깨달음은 언제나 미묘한 아이러니 혹은 무질서한 에너지를 내포한다.

 

킴킴갤러리 KIMKIM GALLERY

The show title “the man who shot ambivalence” refers to the American movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, and represents at least a triple entendre, by which ubiquitous ambivalence is metaphorically erased. The point, need I spell it out?, is the exchange of Liberty Valence with the word ambivalence and of course creating an ambivalence between the name Liberty Valence and ambivalence itself. How is the multi-entendre assumable otherwise?

[sic] indicates that a quotation has been transcribed exactly as found in the original source, complete with any erroneous spelling or other nonstandard presentation. Like in “this makes me [sic]“. A linguistic device to ridicule and pun. Or shall we think of Liberty Valence the person: ambivalence represents, a notorious outlaw. The hero/shooter returns for the funeral of an old friend and tells the truth about his difficult moral deed. Let’s not forget, ambivalence is an unpleasant feeling, and that is a fact particularly well understood by the shown artists. 

Sophie von Hellermann, is a painter born 1975 in Munich, Germany. She studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Royal of College of Art London. She was a founding member of the artist group hobbypopMUSEUM. Sophie von Hellermann past exhibition venues include the Saatchi Gallery London, Jablonka Gallery, Cologne, Greene Naftaly Gallery, New York , Marc Foxx Gallery, Los Angeles, Ghislaine Hussenot Gallery, Paris, and Vilma Gold, London, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Sophie von Hellermann is best known for her large-scale, romantic, pastel-washed canvases, which are often installed to suggest complex narrative threads. Applying pure pigment on to unprimed canvas, Hellermann’s use of broad-brushed washes imbue her pictures with a sense of weightlessness so that objects and figures are spread with ease and economy across the picture plane. She says, "What interests me is how the mind works and how dream images come together from things you’ve seen, read, and experienced both years ago and yesterday". She lives & works in London, England.

Stefan Ettlinger is a prolific painter, musician, and film maker, born 1958 in Nuremberg, Germany. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Ettlinger’s past exhibition venues include Greene Naftali Gallery, New York , Harry Zellweger, Basel, Adelson Galleries, New York, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Galerie Ursula Walbröl, Jablonka Gallery, Cologne, Kunstverein Göttingen, He is a founding member of the performance art group anarchistische gummizelle (anarchist padded cell). Ettlinger’s paintings juxtapose seemingly unrelated images within a single picture plane. Looking at them is a bit like channel surfing or the way disparate stories/images become correlated through proximity in a newspaper. The relationships are in fact not accidental and are akin to mixing music and filmmaking, Ettlinger’s other preferred forms of art making. He lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. 

Klaus Weber, born in Sigmaringen, Germany, 1967. 

Klaus Weber has shown extensively in European institutions, most recently at the Nottingham Contemporary in the UK, the Secession in Vienna, the Hayward Gallery in London, the Kunstverein Hamburg, Transmission Gallery in Glasgow, and Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York. His work was included in Manifesta 7 in Tyrol and 11th Triennial of Small Sculpture, in Fellbach, Germany. He has had solo exhibitions with Herald St.– and his work has been included in group shows at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the ICA London, and the Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles. Klaus Weber’s artworks create ruptures with what we would call reality and in so doing they question our deepest belief systems. Social questions of philosophical, psychological or economic nature are generally the points of departure for Weber´s artistic work; methodologically, it is always in close contact with conceptual art. The realisations usually bear the marks of subtle irony or anarchic energy. 

He lives and works in Berlin.

Geert Goiris is a photographer born in Bornhem, Belgium in 1971. Shown extensively internationally, among other, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany Statements Art Basel, Basel, Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels, Museum M, Leuven, Belgium, he received numerous prices, and his work is in numerous public collections. In considering the work of Geert Goiris, I use the term "traumatic" not only to describe its sense of being destabilizing, out of joint, psychologically painful – but also to touch on the German word "traum," or dream. For these stringently realistic photographs nonetheless have that otherwordly, unheimlich quality that one seldom encounters in waking life. Goiris has ventured to areas as far-flung as the Arctic island of Spitzbergen, the forests of Finland, the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah and the frozen desert of Antarctica to create his ominous poetry of solitude, emptiness and decay. In the remotest parts of those isolated territories, he watches and waits for an encounter with the ideal expression of man's ephemerality on the landscape – our ultimate insignificance in geologic time. He lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.
