이유진갤러리는 8월 20일부터 9월 17일까지 새로운 기호와 아이콘을 보여주는 역동적 표현의 회화­ 및 콜라주 작업을 선보이는 작가 윤혜진(b.1975- )의 개인전을 개최한다. High-Voltage Low-tech라는 작업의 키워드로 다채로운 컬러와 여과 없이 직관적으로 표현하는 그의 작품은 캔버스 화면에 정제되지 않은 높은 전압의 파동을 그대로 전달한다. 주로 뉴욕에서 활동해온 윤혜진 작가가 국내에서 첫 선을 보이는 개인전으로 최근 신작 삼십 여 점을 선보인다.

 

이번 전시는 ‘The Gateless Gate’(무문관)라는 불교적 화두인 수행의 용어를 작업의 모티프로 작가 고유의 시각적 언어로 재해석하고 있다. 즉흥적으로 캔버스 위에 그리고 뿌리고 흘리는 등 우연적 표현에 의해 이루어지는 기법상의 특징과 함께 변형된 이미지들은 사람이나 동물, 식물도 아닌 규정되지 않은 실체를 이야기한다. 이 실체들은 특정한 카테고리에 속해있지 않으며 말이나 논리로 제한되는 순간 사라지는, 인습이나 시간성에서 독립된 새로운 무시간의 언어로서­ 제시되고 있다. 관습에 지배 받지 않는 새로운 문으로 투영된 자각과 인식 그리고 관계라는 근원적 질문을 마주하며 작가는 형식과 기술에서­ 벗어나 직관적으로 대상을 자유롭게 표현하고 있다. 예를 들면 하늘은 얼굴, 꽃은 곧 우주의 축으로 대치시키고 시공간의 회전과 열린 관계 속으로 작가는 안내하며 화­려한 색의 긴장과 변형을 통해 황홀경의 아이콘을 화­면에 출현시킨다. 때로는 마치 어린 아이의 그림처럼 보이기도 하는 거대한 몸집에 간결하게 표현한 눈·코·입을 그린 이미지들은 내면의 순수성과 상처받기 쉬운 존재의 연약함을 드러낸다. 이렇게 만들어진 존재들에게서­ 친근하고도 달콤하고 때로는 광포하거나 익살스러운, 작가에 의해 인격화­된 감성들을 발견할 수 있다. 또한 그림 속 형체들은 구상에서 추상으로 또는 추상에서­ 구상으로 변화하는 의식의 움직임을 통해 긴장감과 유동적인 생명력을 느끼게 한다. ‘기린이 된 계란후라이’, ‘춤추는 느티나무’와 같이 주관적 은유와 열­려있는 내러티브를 내포한 작가의 작업은 관람자로 하여금 다양한 추론의 가능성을 열­어주고 다면적 감성을 자아낸다. 그리하여 고정된 틀 안의 사물에 인식의 경계를 벗어난­ 원초적이고 다듬어지지 않는 작가만의 독특한 코드로 ‘문 없는 문’의 소통을 보여주고 있다.

 

윤혜진은 파슨스 디자인 스쿨 Parsons the New School for Design에서­ 순수미술을 전공하고 동 대학원을 졸업하였다. A.I.R. Gallery와 John Connelly Presents에서­ 개인전을 발표했으며 뉴욕타임즈에 기재되는 등 뉴욕에서­ 주목 받는 한국의 젊은 작가로 활동하였고 국내에서­의 활동이 더욱 기대되는 작가이다.

 

Lee Eugean Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Haejin Yoon (b.1975-), who creates painting and collage works that display new signs and icons with dynamic expressions, from August 20 to September 17. Using rich colors and unfiltered intuitive expressions, Yoon brings out her keyword, High-Voltage Low-tech, in her paintings. In this solo exhibition, also her debut in Korea, the New York-based artist presents over twenty new paintings produced in recent years.

In The Gateless Gate, Yoon reinterprets a Buddhist spiritual practice in her own visual language. The artist said that her process of painting includes improvisational scattering and spilling of paint onto canvas, which demonstrate undefined substances that are neither a human nor an animal nor a plant. The transfigured forms are made intentionally ambiguous, and they do not belong to a certain category and disappear when confined to a word or logic. They are suggested as language liberated from concepts of time and conventional aspects. The works intuitively express the spontaneous relationship between the subject and the medium. In The new gate, the artist confronts fundamental questions of self-awareness, perception, and relations which is uninhibited by a custom. The artist, for example, juxtaposes a sky to a face and a flower to an axis of the universe, in order to express the openness of time as well as space. By means of altering and adjusting the tension of the vibrant colors, the ecstatic icons that reoccur in these works can at times appear amorphous. In some works a pair of eyes or hint of limb playfully suggests the vulnerability and purity of a being. In these creations the viewers can discover intimacy, sweetness, humor, ferocity, and many other different kinds of emotions. Through a conscious shifting to and from figuration to abstraction, the paintings portray a sense of tension and flexible vitality. The artist’s work contains personal metaphors and open-ended narratives, as demonstrated in The Fried Egg that Became a Giraffe and The Dancing Zelkova Tree. These paintings make possible for the viewers to draw out various interpretations and multifaceted sensibilities. Her raw and naïve expression, which shows unique point a view deviating from stagnant boundaries, opens the gateless gate.

Haejin Yoon graduated from Parsons the New School for Design, majoring in Fine Arts in the undergraduate and graduate program. Yoon also held solo exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery and John Connelly Presents, and was featured in The New York Times. As an emerging Korean artist in New York, Yoon aspires to be active in Korea.
