그리고(GRIGO) 갤러리는 <Next Generation>의 첫 번째 작가로 김민범 작가를 소개한다. 김민범 작가는 사진을 기반으로 회화, 설치, 미디어 등 다양한 영역을 넘나 들며 새롭고 독창적인 작업 을 통해 대중에게 신선한 미적 경험을 안겨 주고 있는 젊은 작가이다.
이번 그리고(GRIGO) 갤러리에서의 김민범 개인전은 사진을 유리에 프린트 제작하여 중세 스테인드글라스 기법을 일부 재현한 사진 작업과 3미터 길이의 대형 동판에 소의 형상을 각인하고 채색한 설치 작업이 선보인다.
김민범의 사진 작업은 디지털로 촬영한 오브제들을 중첩시킨 상태에서 유리에 프린트하는 복잡한 축적과 복제의 과정을 거치는 동안 사진이라는 매체를 전혀 새로운 방식으로 인식하게 만든다.
유리에 프린트된 사진은 기술이 개입된 광학적 미디어로서의 사진이라는 ‘평면적 물성’을 유리공예가 결합된 회화적 장르로 탈바꿈 할 뿐 아니라 여기에 유리를 통과하는 ‘빛의 정신성’을 더함으로써 신성하고 감각적인 경험을 하게 만든다.
아울러 오브제가 복제되고 재현되는 과정에서 무의식적으로 드러나는 표상은 인상적이게도 김민범만의 강력한 생명력으로 채워진, 지극히 존재하지 않는 것에 대한 매혹적인 이끌림을 선사한다.
한편, 전시장 한쪽 면을 채우고 있는 3미터 길이의 거대 동판에 각인된 소의 이미지는 2014년 대구 사진비엔날레에 전시되었던 그의 소머리 연작 사진작업의 확장된 담론으로 그 연장선상에 있다는 느낌이 든다.
김민범은 시간을 거슬러 과거의 신화에 등장하는 소의 형상을 차용하고 여기에 현대적 그래피티를 덧붙여 재해석하는 방식을 통해, ‘태생적 아름다움’을 가진 소의 ‘보이지 않는 힘’을 은유와 상징으로 시각화하는 작업에 몰두하고 있다.
김민범의 작업은 흔히 예술이라는 전문화된 언어의 영역 안에서 작품을 감상 할 때 사색과도 같은 ‘거리 두기’가 아닌, 그의 오랜 기간 고되게 감수성을 양성시켰던 작업 기간과는 달리, ‘즉각적이고도 우연한 발견과 감흥’을 불러 일으킨다
또한, 최신 프린트 기술을 결합시키거나 다양한 재료에 이미지와 텍스트를 덧붙여 담론을 확장시키는 김민범의 작업 방식은 동시대 예술이 나아갈 지점을 보여 주고 있다.
이번 전시는 한국 현대미술의 중요한 작가로 성장해 갈 김민범의 창조적이며 실험적인 작가적 태도와 흥미로운 예술 세계를 온전히 경험할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.

김민범 작가는 광주대학교에서 사진영상을 전공하고 사진을 기반으로 다양한 영역에서 전 방위적 작업을 하고 있는 시각예술가로 최근, 그의 사진작업이 대구사진비엔날레, 중국 포토페스티벌, 러시아 모스크바 국제사진전에서 전시가 되는 등 국제적인 주목을 받고 있는 미래가 기대가 되는 젊은 신진작가이다.

<Adding On – Min Beom Kim>

Artist: Min Beom Kim
Grigo Gallery is thrilled to introduce Min Beom Kim as the first artist of the Next Generation series. While basing in photography, Kim’s work encompasses other mediums such as painting, installation, and media. Kim is a young artist whose unique and creative work delivers an unprecedented aesthetic experience to the public.
The Min Beom Kim solo exhibition at the Grigo Gallery exhibits the photographic works that are printed on glass, reviving the medieval stained glass technique, and a three-meter-long, large bronze installation to which an image of a cow is engraved and painted.
Kim’s photographic works alter a viewer’s perception of photography as a medium, as it takes the viewer through the complicated process of printing the overlapped digital images on glass, thus involving compression and reproduction.
The printed photograph on glass not only transforms the “two-dimensional matter” of photography from a mere, technological media to a glasswork fine art, but it also adds the “spirituality of light” that transcends the artwork to a divine experience.
Further, in the process of reproduction and actualization of the objects, the unconsciously conveyed image is impressively filled with Min Beom Kim’s powerful life, thus creating a compelling force of something nonexistent.
On the other hand, the image of a cow on the three-meters-long, large bronze panel that fills one wall of the exhibition room is seemingly a continuum of Kim’s series of cow head photographic works that were displayed in Daegu Photograph Biennale in 2014.
Kim refers to the representation of cows in ancient myths and adds a layer of modern graffiti to re-contextualize and therefore uses the image of a cow with its “innate beauty” to symbolize and visualize its “invisible force.”
As opposed to the “distance” created by self-contemplation and his long-time development of artistic vision and career, Kim’s art ignites “spontaneous and unintended discovery and inspiration.”
Also, combining the cutting-edge printing technology and adding text on various medium and images expand the artistic discourse – a method that indicates the future of contemporary art.
The exhibition will serve as a great opportunity to experience the significant emerging artist Min Beom Kim’s creative and experimental artistic view and intriguing art world.

Min Beom Kim studied Photography and Video at Gwangju University and works with various mediums while basing in Photography. Recently, his works were displayed in Daegu Photography Biennale, China Photography Festival, Russia Moscow International Foto Exhibit. With such global spotlight, Kim is an emerging artist with a promising future.
