 소통을 가로막는 것들로부터 소통하기 by 박서혜

현대사회는 눈부신 문명들과 함께한다. 앞으로 우리의 삶을 둘러싼 문명들이 발달해 감에 따라 점차 화려해지며 눈이 부실 것은 분명하다. 그렇다면 오늘날은 어떠한가?

눈부신 문명들의 사회에서 문명의 발달과 더불어 살고 있는 우리들은 과연 진정으로 서로 소통하고 행복할 수 있을까? 혹시 화려한 문명들이 인간본연의 자연스러움과 의 소통을 가로막고 있는 것이 아닐까? 하는 의문에서 나의 작업은 시작되어 왔다.

일명 '세계화의 시대' 라고 포장된 우리 사회는 세계화라는 넓은 범위 아래 치열한 경쟁과 능력위주의 일명 자본주의 사회구조 안에서 생산성을 지향한다. 이때 우리 사회적 인간은 최소한의 '인간다움'을 어떻게 찾아낼 수 있을까? 우리는 이러한 생산성을 지향하는 사회구조 안에서 그 실존을 배제 당한 채 단단한 사회구조 안에 갇혀있는 것이 아닐까?

나는 그 이미지 소재의 선정을 놀이공원에서 찾았다. 놀이공원 중에서도 특히 놀이기구에 주목했는데 회전하는 이미지, 철골의 구조, 조명이 주는 환상성의 효과를 앞서 밝힌 현대문명과의 이중성에 주목해보았다. 놀이공원의 화려한 장식과 조명은 현대문명을 그대로 상징하고 있다. 이때 놀이공원은 우리 현실의 삶과 동떨어져있는 분위기를 연출하여 이에 탈 일상성을 느끼고 잠시나마 위안을 얻는 대안공간으로 인식할 수도 있고 화려한 퍼레이드가 끝난 후의 놀이공원의 모습은 마치 소외된 인간처럼 허망하여 화려함 속의 고독을 느낄 수도 있다. 놀이공원의 수많은 놀이기구 중에 서도 '회전목마' 라는 소재를 택한 이유는 우리 사회적 인간이 자유를 소외 당한 채 자본주의 사회 속에서 생산성을 지향하며 돌고 도는 모습과 유사하다는 생각에서부터 이다. 각자 화려한 현대의 문명 속에서 화려한 가면을 쓰고 그저 그들의 동력인 태엽으로 인해 돌고 있는 것이다. 진정한 소통이 부재 한 채로, 마치 도시의 수많은 자동차불빛들이 뿜어내는 화려한 조명들은 여러 갈래의 아스팔트도로 위를 돌고 돌지만 그 안에서 진정한 소통과 행복이 과연 이루어지고 있는지 알 수 없는 것과 마찬가지로 닮아있다는 생각이 든다. 놀이공원 특유의 소란스러움을 배제 했을 때 놀이공원은 우리가 인식해오던 환상적인 공간이 아니라 너무나도 익숙한 현대문명의 요소들만이 자리하고 있다 이때 우리는 어떤 감정을 느낄 수 있을까.

나의 작업은 결국 생산성을 지향하는 자본주의 사회구조가 우리에게 제공하는 화려하고 눈부신 문명의 이면이 과연 우리에게 어떤 의미로 다가서는가를 되돌아보자는 물음이다. 이때 우리가 화려한 장식과 조명 등 문명의 이면에서 답답함과 불편함을 느낀다면 불편함을, 돌고 도는 회전 목마처럼 불안정한 출발선 상에서 언제든지 돌아올 수 있는 견고함과 안락함을 느낀다면 문명의 안락함을, 화려한 장식이 주는 눈부심이 기쁨과 설렘을 자극한다면 기쁨을 돌아보며 나의 작업이 제공한 이미지는 소통을 가로막는 것들로부터 소통해 결국 우리들의 행복을 추구하는 하는 매체로 작동한다.

Modern world has facedextremely sophisticated civilization's strikes. The figure of society of 20thcentury was eager and natural moving of every factor of life to a city.Furthermore, the society of present time reaches the axis of more refinedcivilization as the size of a city getting bigger.

Then, is it possible tocommunicate and be happy for our kinds who have lived while we surrounded by anumber of media due to the development of society?

This is my starting point.This is a question about how we can find the humanity and love the philosophywithin the social structure of nowadays; severe competition supported by upperclass's rigid ideology so called 'the age of globalization'.

Our existences have beendisregarded in the productivity-orientated society. My work is suggestion.Think again the meaning of consequence of the highly developed civilization forus. I found it in the amusement park. Especially I was focus on the carousel,because of its  image of rotating, the structure of frame, and theillusion by the illumination. And we have already know that these are ourproduct of civilization. We recognize there where pretend to be unreal world byhaving frames and fancy lightings that represent the contemporary asalternative place for real world with feeling being out of day life. However,there is nothing special like just ordinary people who are disregarded. Whenyou turn off the lights, as I mentioned earlier, there is filled with justanother output of civilization. And there is not paradise anymore. I think weare only horses of the merry-go-round. We require to stick the proper positionand to produce product. We need to make our face smile, even if it is fake likethe wooden horses. And we are living like rotating by the force of carousel'sspiral coil.

There is no need to be humanand have own purpose. There are only numerous the beams of an automobileheadlights while making circular form on the road of a city without anycommunication as the merry-go-round with no dream of happiness. Therefore, Itried to express disregard of humanity and sullenness above by depicting therides of amusement park which pretend to be unreal with modern material. And Iuse a realistic portrayal and drawing with metal substances simultaneously.This is for my originality.

I hope I will rediscover thegeneral 'authenticity of our life'--meaning of our life and what isimportant for our life. And I also wish I can reconfirm it by others.
