오만철의 작품은 전통적 기법을 사용하면서도 약간 빗나간 시각을 읽게 한다. 한국화를전공하였으면서 또한 도예를 전공하여 도자기를 만드는 일에 집착하는 과정에서 나타나는 작품의 특이성이다. 그것은한국화와 도자기를 따로 따로 생각할 것이 아니라 두 매체를 사용한 작품들을 함께 어우러져 연상할 수 있는 연계성이다. 그림 뿐 아니라 오만철이 새롭게 시도한 도판 작업을 들여다 보면, 작가의주관적 세계관이 펼쳐 있다. 필자의 관심을 끄는 것은 도자기 작품에 보이는 구도상의 특색과 공간처리에서나타나는 세상을 바라보는 시각이다. 거칠게 흩어지는 붓 자국과 그것이 만드는 이미지는 그의 도자기의작품에서 우연하게 드러나게 되는 불(火)과 유약의 기교처럼흐른다. 그것은 유약으로 표현할 수 잇는 한계로서 거칠게 나타날 수밖에 없다. 이러한 특색이 도자기를 통해서 세상 바라보기를 상상할 수 있게 한다. 그의대부분 도자기 그림들은 그려진 배경과 그림을 비교하면서 볼 때 공간의 깊이가 항상 있기 마련이다. 오래바라보면서 관조하여야 발견할 수 있는 공간의 인식이다. 이러한 맥락에서 오만철의 작품은 특별한 이해가요구된다. 주로 철화백자를 빗어내면서 철저한 장인적인 역량과 심원한 예술 정신이 결합되어 그의 예술세계에있어 진정한 만남의 장이 될 것으로 믿어 의심치 않는다.

Employing the traditional technique. OMan-cheol seems to portray the deviant trend. It is the feature of art workresulting from the fact that O Man-cheol majors Sumukhwa and also focuses on creatingpotteries. Instead of separating of Sumukhwa from the potteries, it is theconnectivity to imagine the harmonized art work employing two mediasimultaneously. Other than drawing, looking at the plating work newlyintroduced by O Man-cheol, we can read his subjective art world. The thing todraw the painter's attention is the perspective of the world according to thefeature of the composition and handling the space on the pottery. The bold,tough stroke of brush and its image are indicated on the surface of potterylike the technique of the fire and the glaze characterized as the accidentalwork. It can be indication of the roughness as the limited expression of theglaze. This feature makes it possible to imagine the world through the lensesof the pottery. Most of his drawings on the pottery contains the depth of thespace comparing with the background and drawings. The recognition of the spaceis feasible with the result of long contemplation. From this point of view, theart work of O Man-cheol requires special understanding. O Man-cheol mainlycreates iron plate pottery and the combination of the thorough master'scapacity with the profound art spirituality will certainly e the true encounterin his art world.
