《당신의 처음이 제가 아니기를》은 ‘전시’의 패러다임에 대한 전위적 변화를 모색하는 프로젝트의 전시이다. 이번 프로젝트는 동시대 ‘전시’에서 반복되는 구성 요소들의 형식을 차용하거나 전시장 환경의 특정 대상을 재현하는 작업들을 살펴본다. 작가의 의도를 포함한 작업의 맥락을 일시적으로 재배열하는 시도를 통해 하나의 전시 단위가 지니는 구조체로서의 면모를 드러내는, 일종의 자기-지시적(self-referential)인 전시를 구현한다.
작품보호선과 작품보호요원, 작품이름표와 작품설명문, 전시 책자와 전시 포스터, 전시장 가벽과 전시제작자, 시설미화원과 실내공조기 등은 이번 전시에서 참여 작가들이 주목한 전시 단위의 요소들이다. 이 중 일부는 관람객을 대상으로 한 교육의 장치로서, 또 다른 일부는 작품을 ‘예술화’ 시키는 제도권 전시의 도구로서 기능한다. 이번 프로젝트는 이러한 소위 ‘화이트 큐브’의 조건들에 대해 어떠한 긍정 및 부정을 표명하기보다 복수의 문화적 맥락들이 교차하는 전시의 다층적 성격을 드러내는 데 주력하고자 한다.
전시 《당신의 처음이 제가 아니기를》은 일련의 전시공간에서 서로 다른 작업들을 엮는 한편 각 전시 구성 요소들이 기능하는 서로의 관계를 조명한다. 나아가 관객들이 전시장의 기존 작품 배치를 새롭게 구성할 수 있는 참여공간을 선보인다.
이번 전시가 회화, 조소, 사진, 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스, 디자인 등 다양한 감수성의 시각매체를 가로지르는 가운데, 관객이 전시의 구조를 ‘탐문(inquiry)’하는 과정에서 그 조건 요소들을 새롭게 지각하고, 도래할 관람 문화 및 전시 패러다임의 변화를 상상해보는 계기가 되기를 바란다.

<If I Were Not Your First> is the exhibition on a project that seeks avant-garde changes in the paradigm of ‘exhibitions.’ In this project, either exhibition formats practically codified in contemporary art scene is used as objet or the stereotypes mostly encountered in the gallery are reproduced as art works. By making attempts to rearrange the context of works including artists’ intentions, it is featured as a sort of self-referential exhibition, which presents the aspect of a complex every exhibition makes up in its own.
Artists collaborating on this exhibition have paid attention to the format such as borderlines, labels, captions, guide leaflets, posters, partitions, gallery attendants, installation engineers, cleaners, and an air conditioner and so on. Some of them function as methods given to visitors in an educational purpose, and others as tools that give ‘art qualifications’ to works in the practically authorized exhibition system. It is not intended in this project to argue for or against the requirements within so-called a ‘white cube.’ Rather, it is a variety of characteristics with which varied cultural context mingles that should be centered on.
In this exhibition, <If I Were Not Your First>, not only are different kinds of works woven together in a series of display but also the way exhibition components interact with each other is illuminated. Further, there would be a participation area for visitors to arrange existing works in their own way.
This exhibition is comprised of a diversity of sensitive visual art medium, covering paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, installations, performances, and designs etc. It would be the most satisfactory that one comes to aware the components while he or she inquires the exhibition structure of themselves, and that this gives an opportunity to imagine the paradigm shift when it comes to the way of experiencing or displaying art works onward.
