타르와 잡초

김하늘은 ‘매혹’과 ‘뉘앙스’ 를 탐구하는 비서사 영상들을 만든다. 매개된 경험들로 보편화된 현재 속에서, 파운드 푸티지와 직접 촬영한 영상들을 조합하여 느낌mood 과 분위기atmosphere 를 레디메이드 질료로 활용하는 영상 작업을 하고 있다. 암시allusion 와 추상화abstraction 과정인 그의 작업은 ‘현실 속 날 것의 실재들과의 감각적 대면’ 으로 정의되며, 산만하고 광범위한 디지털 문명에 인간의 마음이 어떠한 형태로 닿아 있는지 반영하고 있다. 표면적인 왜곡, 현상적 이질감, 서사적 교훈의 부재와 같은 요소들을 통해, 그의 작업은 통합, 조화, 융합으로의 복종을 외치는 디지털 문명사회의 내밀하고 동시다발적인 매개성의 형태를 드러낸다. 인간의 믿음과 기억을 정확하고 효율적인 데이터로 가치화하는 새로운 인간중심주의적 서사 권력에 반하여, 우리의 이성으로부터 숨어있는 실재를 불명확함과 불완전함이라는 몰입감을 가진 비인칭적 감정들이 매료하는 감각적 경험들로써 은유하는 영상 작업을 하고 있다.

Hanul Kim investigates allure and nuance in his non-narrative video works. Working with both found and shot footages, he’s interested in repurposing mood and atmosphere as readymade objects in an age of mediated experience. As a sensual confrontation with raw materials of the reality, his work in the form of allusion and abstraction reflects the way our mind meets the discursive digital culture. Through surface distortion, surrealistic unfolding and absence of narrative uniformity, his work celebrates the distance and disparity alien to the diversity and integration of digital civilization. As human belief and memory now belong to the precision and efficiency of data, he explores the inexplicable ambience of impersonal emotionality immersed in uncertainty and incompleteness.

서울에서 태어난 김하늘은, School of Visual Arts 에서 순수 예술을 전공하였고, Rhode Island School of Design 에서 디지털 미디어를 전공하여 예술 석사를 받았다. Rhode Island School of Design 대학원에서 미학과 영상학을 가르쳤다. Regina Rex 갤러리, Anthology Film Archives, 80WSE 갤러리, ABC No Rio, SVA 영화관, CICA 박물관, antiPODAS, North Bellarine 영화제, AICOT 등 다수의 갤러리와 영화제에서 전시 및 상영을 하였다.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Hanul Kim received BFA in Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts and MFA in Digital Media from Rhode Island School of Design. He has taught film and aesthetic theory class in Digital Media department at Rhode Island School of Design. He has presented his work at museums, galleries, and film festivals including Regina Rex gallery, Anthology Film Archives, ABC No Rio, 80WSE Gallery, SVA Theater, CICA Museum, antiPODAS, North Bellarine Film Festival and AICOT in Tokyo.
