2. 전시내용 

Chalk Drawings

  저 자신에게 있어 회화란 무엇인가에 대한 질문은 아마도 살아있는 동안 끊임없이 이어질 화두인 듯합니다. 회화가 꼭 무엇이 될 필요는 없지만, “살아가는 사람”으로, 상호관계성이라는 사회성을 지닌 존재인 이상, 인간으로 표상되는 나 자신은 사회적 정의 안에서 모종의 의미를 만들어갈 수밖에 없는 존재임을 되뇌어 봅니다. 인간이란 어떤 존재인가를 생각해볼 때, 존재(存在)라는 단어에 이미 시간성이 내재함을 발견합니다.  인간은 인간 자신이 언젠가는 사라질 수밖에 없는 유한적 존재임을 자각함과 동시에 주어진 시간의 유한성 아래 구현되는 반복과 또 차이라는 현현을 통해 실존의 의미를 획득하는 듯합니다. 실존하는 의미가 무엇인지, 또는 무엇이 되는지는 시간성 내에서 정립된 시대사조의 영향을 받아, 또 그것을 어떻게 바라보고 평가하느냐에 대한 가변적인 관점에 따라 다르게 규정될 수 있습니다.
 
  어쩌면 주체로서의 인간은 지각으로는 도달할 수 없지만, 가정되었으나, 전제하는 영원이라는 시간을 통해, 그리고 그 한계에서 오는 괴리감을 극복하기 위해, 존재의 실존성이라는 의미를 만들고, 무엇인지는 확정지을 수 없고 알 수 없는 인간 자신의 존재 근원을, 인지할 수 있는 한에서의 시간성의 영역 아래, 그 유한함의 한계를 통해 나름의 의미를 만드려는 시도를 하는 듯합니다.  모든 시도를 해보았다고 여겨지기도 하는 현시대에서 회화를 한다함은 무엇인가에 대한 물음이 다시금 떠오릅니다. 어쩌면 우리가 편의상으로 만들어 상용하는 언어만으로는 온전히 설명할 수 없다고 어렴풋한 감을 잡아봅니다. 어떠한 측면에서 아직 표현되지 않았고, 세상에 기투 되어 나오지 않은 것들에 대한 시관적 충동 표출, 혹은 제 자신 안에 내재한 표현적 욕망을 좁은 의미로써의 회화로 나타내는 행위 과정 그 자체와 이전에 바라보지 못했던 것들을 다른 시각에서 볼 수 있게 되고, 여러한 측면 에서 생각해 볼 수 있게 해주는 열린 담론에서의 관점에서, 넓은 의미로써의 회화가, 지금 제가 회화를 계속 해 나가는 이유라고 잠정적으로 말할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 저라는 작가 자신이 태어나면서부터 타고 났지만, 살아가면서 고도의 훈련을 통해 어느 정도는 길러지고, 또 체내화 된 미적 감각을 통해, 무엇인지는 정확히 알 수 없지만, 이를 표현해 내고자 하는 열망과 시도, 그리고 이를 가시적으로 구현해가면서, 해체해보고, 재구성해 나가는, 정답 아닌, 외려 물음을 찾아가며, 또 다른 가능성을 지닌, 살아가는 일부이자 연장선으로 저의 시도를 바라보며, 제 작업 동기를 어렴풋이 감지해 봅니다.

  저는 “결정되어 있지 않은 삶”이라는 최근의 연작을 통해, 확정할 수 없지만, 결정되어 있지 않은, 무한한 가능성을 내포하고 있을 수도 있는 현실에 대해, 숙고하며 탐구하는 중입니다. 저만의 상상력으로, 제가 직접 경험하였거나, 관찰자의 입장이지만, 상상이 가미되었을 수도 있는 일어나고 있는 현상 또는 가설적으로 아직 현실 세계에서 작동하지 않은 세계까지도 캔버스라는 특수한 시공간의 장으로 끌어와, 임의적 구성 요소들을 유희적으로 자유롭게 구상한 후, 그들 나름의 조형적 배치와 조화를 궁구하여, 하나의 큰 그림으로 그려 나가는 과정을 하고 있습니다. 그리고 타자로 대표될 수 있는, 바라보는 시선들 또한 변화 또는 전환시키는 실험들을 유화 작업으로 표현 하고 있는 중입니다.

indeterminacy of life

  I am interested in what constitutes our ontology and curious about how we perceive certain things through the lens of “cultured” values, conventions, and structure. I’d like to investigate and play with the implications behind the agreed forms and constructed boundaries. I will create drawings and paintings as a gesture to repudiate the dominant ideology and the cultural hegemony by reconstituting the forms of living things. This endeavor is a suggestion of an alternative mode of being through creating images morphologically fragmented and combined, by diffusing what is regarded as representational and abstract. It implies unpredictable variability of life forms defying uncertain propositions transcending dualistic divisions between what is natural and what is cultured. It is an attempt to address a series of imperceptible movements, modes of becoming, or forms of change embodying the history of the past and the future. I will create an open discourse for a continuous process of making and unmaking positions, as I would break and merge the dominant forms and alter the canonical configurations in traditional drawings and paintings.

  My paintings are mindscapes. In my recent work, “indeterminacy of life”, I contemplate our uncertain yet indeterminable reality. Fragmented figures, stories, and scenes are overlapped within the layers of multiple translucent veils. A series of ambiguous invented images remain ambivalent and can not be deciphered. One only can see a partial view as a glimpse and things may not be what they seem to be. Although my mind is somehow hidden like an enigmatic rebus, I do search for openings within the seemingly rigid structure. Soothing, soft, and washed pastel colours of oil paintings invite viewers to linger in my maze. After all, it is an open ended puzzle indeed. I am interested in modifying and shifting perceptions of our mind.
