바라캇 컨템포러리는 2020년을 여는 첫 전시로 3월 12일부터 4월 26일까지 독일의 작가 듀오 펠레스 엠파이어(Peles Empire)의 <Even here, I exist>전을 개최합니다.

펠레스 엠파이어는 카타리나 스퇴버와 바바라 볼프로 구성된 협업 그룹으로서, 2017년 독일 뮌스터 조각 프로젝트에 공공 미술 작품을 선보이며 크게 주목을 받은 바 있습니다. 2005년, 각 시대의 역사적인 양식이 위계 없이 혼합된 루마니아의 펠레스 성을 모방하며 시작한 두 사람의 협업은 여러 이질적인 요소들의 결합으로 생기는 예기치 못한 변화를 실험하며 십오 년째 진화해오고 있습니다. 이들은 원본과 복제의 구분을 비롯하여 역사적인 것과 현대적인 것, 이차원과 삼차원, 완성과 미완성, 우아한 것과 하찮은 것 등 작가들은 우리가 관념적으로 갖는 이분법적인 구분과 위계를 흐리는 작업을 선보입니다.

 

본 전시는 펠레스 엠파이어의 아시아 첫 개인전으로 바라캇 컨템포러리의 공간을 이용한 장소 특정적 설치와 한국의 도자기에서 영감을 얻은 신작을 포함한 조각과 설치를 선보입니다. 매 전시 새로운 문화적인 해석의 변주를 일으키며 작업을 이어오는 펠레스 엠파이어의 개인전에 초대하오니 많은 관심과 성원을 바랍니다.

Barakat Contemporary is pleased to announce its first exhibition of 2020, Even here, I exist by artist duo Peles Empire from 12 March to 26 April.

Peles Empire is a collaborative group consisting of Katharina Stöver and Barbara Wolff, and have received much attention since the 2017 Muenster Sculpture Project in Germany. The collaboration between the two began in 2005, with a project that works from and recreates the interior of Peles Castle in Romania, a building in which the architectural styles of various historical periods are mixed without any hierarchy. From its origins as a simple idea, the collaborative project has evolved for the past 15 years with the blending of heterogeneous elements. The artists illuminate the distinction between original and copy, and the work mixes elements that are traditionally divided along dichotomies; original and copy, historical and contemporary, elegant and lowbrow, and two-dimensional versus three.

This is the first solo exhibition of Peles Empire in Korea and Asia, and features a selection of sculptures and installations including new ceramic works as well as a site-specific installation that utilizes Barakat Contemporary’s space. We are delighted to invite you to this solo exhibition of Peles Empire, a group that continues to introduce new themes of cultural analysis and to transform itself with each exhibition.

펠레스 엠파이어 PELES EMPIRE 

펠레스 엠파이어는 바바라 볼프(Barbara Wolff, b. 1980. 루마니아)와 카타리나 스퇴버(Katharina Stöver, b.1982. 독일)로 구성된 예술가 그룹이다. 독일의 슈테델슐레 예술 학교와 영국의 슬레이드 예술학교 및 왕립 아카데미에서 수학했다. 펠레스 엠파이어는 2005년 그룹을 결성한 이후로 동명의 전시공간을 운영해오고 있는데, 그 시작은 영국 런던과 루마니아의 클루이이며 현재는 독일 베를린에서 작업과 함께 공간을 운영하며 예술가들과 협업을지속해오고 있다. 펠레스 엠파이어의 주요 개인전으로는 오스트리아 쿤스트하우스 그라츠(2019),  독일 쿤스트페어라인(2017), 독일 빌렘 핵 뮤지엄(2015), 독일 슈투트가르트 쿤스트뮤지엄(2013), 영국 글래스고 조각스튜디오(2013), 영국 셀 프로젝트 스페이스(2013) 등이 있으며, 주요 단체전으로는 스코틀랜드 국립현대미술관(2019), 독일 뮌스터 조각 프로젝트(2017),  독일 하노버 슈프렝겔 뮤지엄(2017), 독일 KW 인스티튜트 (2015), 영국 ICA(2011),  영국 프리즈 프로젝트(2011) 등이 있다. 현재 펠레스 엠파이어의 작품은 유럽중앙은행, 독일 KAI10/아르테나 재단, 독일 슈투트가르트 쿤스트뮤지엄, 독일 연방 공화국 현대미술컬렉션 등의 유수한 기관에 소장되어있다.

Peles Empire is a two-person collaboration composed of the artists Barbara Wolff (b. 1980, Romania) and Katharina Stöver (b. 1982, Germany). They studied at the Stedelschule School of Art in Germany, the Slade School of Art in the UK, and the Royal Academy. Since the establishment of the group in 2005, Peles Empire have also run a variety of exhibition spaces under the same name, first in London, England and Cluj, Romania, and now in collaboration with other artists in operating a space in Berlin, Germany. Peles Empire’s major solo exhibitions include Austria’s Kunsthaus Graz (2019), Germany’s Kunst Verein (2017), Wilhelm-Hack-Museum (2015), and Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2013), and England’s Glasgow Sculpture Studio (2013), and London Cell Project Space (2013). Major international group exhibitions include the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Scotland (2019), the Skulptur Projekte Münster in Germany (2017), the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, Germany (2017), the KW Institute in Germany (2015), and the UK’s ICA (2011) and Frieze Projects (2011). The works of Peles Empires are currently held in leading permanent collections including the European Central Bank, the KAI 10 / Arthena Foundation, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, and the Sammlung für zeitgenössische Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Germany.
