바라캇 컨템포러리는 2020년 10월 15일부터 12월 13일까지 한국의 대표적인 미디어 아티스트 양아치의 개인전을 개최합니다. 우주의 은하를 의미하는 ‘갤럭시’라는 주제를 이어가고 있는 작가는 이번 3년 만의 개인전을 통하여 주체와 객체, 신체와 사물, 인공과 자연의 구분이 없는 대상들의 네트워크로 이루어진 세계를 구상하는 신작들을 선보입니다. 현재 우리가 경험할 수 있는 지각과 인식의 범위를 넘어서지만 먼 미래의 변화가 아닌 아주 가까운 미래에 다가올 변화를 감지하며, 작가는 자연과 인간, 사물, 기계가 다중적으로 영향을 미치며 존재하는 세계를 예상치 못한 사물들의 조합으로 구성합니다. 새로운 기술과 함께 빠르게 변화하는 세계를 이미 알려진 해석으로 압축하지 않고 감각할 수 있도록, 작가는 다중적인 눈과 감각기관을 가진 미래적인 징후를 내포하는 사물들을 제시하고 우리가 그 안에서 실마리를 찾아가도록 인도합니다. 눈에 보이지 않고 느낄 수 없지만 존재하는 세계와의 접점을 실험하며 ‘미디어’의 영역과 그 본질을 탐구해 온 양아치 작가의 개인전에 많은 관심을 바랍니다.

Barakat Contemporary is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the work of Yangachi, one of Korea’s preeminent media artists, from 15 October to 13 December 2020. The first solo exhibition in three years for an artist who has recently focused on the theme “galaxy,” it features newly commissioned work that envisions a world made up of networks among objects without distinctions of subject vs. object, body vs. thing or artificial vs. natural. Yangachi detects changes that exceed the scope of what we are capable of perceiving and recognizing now, but that are poised to arrive in the very near rather than distant future. Through combinations of unusual objects, he composes worlds that exist amid the multilayered influences of nature, humanity, objects, and machines. To allow us to perceive the world amid the rapid changes brought by new technology without condensing everything into existing interpretations, the artist presents us with objects that incorporate futuristic tokens, bearing multilayered eyes and sensory organs, while guiding us to locate the clues hidden within. As an artist, Yangachi has explored the realm of “media” and its essence through his experiments with points of contact with a world that exists despite being invisible and imperceptible. 양아치 YANGACHI

 

양아치(1970~)는 2000년대 초반 웹 기반의 작업을 시작으로 새로운 미디어의 가능성과 그 이면의 사회·문화·정치적인 영향력을 비판적으로 탐구해 온 한국의 대표적인 미디어아티스트이다. 양아치라는 독특한 이름은 본명이 조성진인 작가가 사용하는 예명으로 작업 초기에 사용하던 온라인 아이디가 작가명이 되었다. 양아치는 전시뿐 아니라 음악, 무용, 건축, 문학 등 다양한 영역의 전문가들과의 협업으로 미디어의 영역을 실험하고 확장해왔다. 주요 전시로는 서울미디어시티 비엔날레(2018, 2010), 부산 비엔날레(2016), 강원 비엔날레(2018), 서울시립미술관(2016, 2015), 백남준 아트센터(2016, 2015, 2008), 아르코 미술관(2020, 2017) 등이 있으며, 프랑스, 홍콩, 일본, 독일, 미국, 칠레 등의 미술 기관 및 행사에서 다수의 국제전을 가졌다. 2010년 아뜰리에 에르메스 재단 미술상을 수상했다. 양아치의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 아모레퍼시픽 미술관 등 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Yangachi(b. 1970) is a leading media artist in Korea who, starting with his web-based work in the early 2000s, has critically explored the possibilities of new media and the social, cultural, and political influences behind it. Yangachi, meaning "gangster" or "good-for-nothing" in Korean, is a pseudonym used by the artist, real name JO Seong Jin, the online ID used in the early stages of his work having become his moniker. Yangachi has experimented with and expanded the realm of media not only through holding exhibitions, but also through collaboration with experts in various fields including music, dance, architecture, and literature. Major exhibitions by the artist include those at the Seoul Media City Biennale (2018, 2010), the Busan Biennale (2016), the Gangwon Biennale (2018), the Seoul Museum of Art (2016, 2015), the Nam June Park Art Center (2016, 2015, 2008), and the Arko Museum of Art (2020, 2017), as well as many international exhibitions at art institutions and art events in France, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, the United States, and Chile. The artist was also the recipient of the Hermes Foundation Missulssang in 2010. Yangachi’s works are housed in a number of prominent institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, the Seoul Museum of Art, the Gyeonggi Museum of Art, and the Amore Pacific Museum of Art.
