이길이구 갤러리는 2021년 1월 16일부터 2월 6일까지 찰리한 (B.1973) <Digits 디지트>전을 개최한다. 찰리한은 사진, 영상, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 통해 문화적, 공간적 이슈를 탐구해 왔다. 이번 전시는 2018년 <Line+beep2>전과 2019년 <Vice Versa>전에 이어 이길이구 갤러리에서 세번째로 기획된 전시이다. 처음 선보인 <Line+beep2>전은 실제 공간의 표면을 선과 면으로 해체, 구축하고 사람들의 시선에 따라 도형 또한 완성되고 해체되는 테이핑을 이용한 도형 드로잉 작업을 선보였다면 이후 <Vice Versa>전은 일상 속에 드러난 자연스러운 장면들에 현실을 은유하는 알레고리적 장치를 하고 디지털 조작으로 실제 공간 위에 가상의 선, 면, 도형(시각적 착시의 기본 요소들) 등의 이미지를 현시의 영역 속에 개입시키는 작업을 소개한 바 있다.

2021년 기획된 <Digits 디지트>전은 작가가 특정 시간과 때를 기억하며 날짜와 시간을 대입하는 습관에서 착안되었다. 현재와 기억 사이의 간극을 매개하는 숫자를 스스로 규정하고 기억을 고정하고자 하였다. 신문지 갱지 위에 기계적으로 복제되는 빛바랜 몇 개의 역사적 이미지를 선택하여, 100여 군데의 특정장소에 숨겨둔다. 일정 시간이 흐른 뒤 다시 그 이미지를 수거한다. 반듯하게 펼친 이미지와 그 장소들과의 관계성을 기억하며 숫자를 조합하고, 스텐실로 각각 다른 숫자를 병렬시킨 후, 공판화 기법으로 기록하기를 반복하는 작업이다. 인류 보편적인 숫자 체계를 통해 사적인 기억을 규정짓고 드러나는 순간 다시 일반적으로 환원된다. 기억을 규정하는 수열은 보는 이들의 기억 속에서 각각의 기의 signified로 변환된다. 전시는 총 20여 작품으로 구성 되며 신작으로 평면작품 <Significant Digit>와 영상 작품 단편 애니메이션 <Looped>이다. 특히 이번 전시에서 선보이는 최근작인 영상 작업은 절반 이상의 인생을 타국에서 지내다 어린 시절의 고향으로 돌아와 살기 시작한 낯선 풍광의 흔적만 남은 기억에 날짜와 시간을 대입하며 현재와 기억간의 간극 좁히며 기억을 고정하고자 하는 작가의 의지가 담겨져 있다. 이는 모든 이들의 사적이고 내밀한 기억을 다시금 떠올려 보는 사색의 장을 열어준다.

찰리한 (B.1973)은 미국 메릴랜드 예술대학교 미술학 학사에서 사진으로 학사, 디지털 예술로 석사, 타우슨 대학교 예술대학원에서 시각 예술로 석사 학위를 받았다. 2005년부터 2008년까지 연세대학교 미디어아트 연구소의 연구원으로 활동했으며, ‘광주문화중심도시’ 리서치 프로젝트를 비롯한 정부주관 문화프로젝트에 참여하였다. 또한, 메릴랜드예술대학교의 교수로 재직했으며 2015년부터 지금까지 대구 계명대학교 아트텍 칼리지 영상 애니메이션과 교수로 재직 중이며 활발한 국내외 전시로 미디어 아티스트로의 자리를 굳건히 다지고 있다.

2GIL29 GALLERY presents Charlie Han’s <Digits> from the 16th of January to the 6th of February 2021. Charlie Han’s practice discovers architectural and cultural issues through diverse genres from photography, media art to installation works. Starting from <Line+beep2> in 2018, <Vice Versa> in 2019, and this exhibition will be the third show with 2GIL29 GALLERY. The first exhibition <Line+beep2> was a form of geometric drawing using masking tape, destroying and re-building the physical space from different angles and depending on view point of the viewers. In <Vice Versa>, Charlie Han introduced digital works creating visual illusions by projecting virtual lines, planes, and geometry on the physical space.

The digital elements were allegorical metaphors of natural scenes in our day to day. The exhibition <Digits> 2021 is a result of the artist’s archival habit, recording specific time and memories by inserting dates and time. It is the artist’s attempt to link the past and present with specific numbers in order to remember the old times. The artist selected several historical images, replicated on top of news print papers, folded and hid the images in 100 different places. After re-collecting the images in a while, the artist straightened the folded images and printed numbers in relation to the hidden places using stencil technique. As soon as personal memories are identified and appears through the numeric system which is humanity’s universal language, it resolves to normal. The lined-up numbers(signifier) transform into the viewer’s(signified) individual memories. The exhibition handles 20 different works by the artist including the artist’s newest two-dimensional works <Significant Digit>, and short animation film <Looped>. Since the artist spent half of his life time abroad, after moving back to his home country, everything has changed except of silhouettes of unclear memories. The animation <Looped> shows the artist’s attempt to narrow the gap between unclear memories of the past and present through linking date and time. Therefore, the exhibition becomes a mediator creating personal speculation for the viewer’s and agitating deep memories from the past.

Charlie Han (B.1973) majored photography in the Fine Arts department in Maryland School for the Arts in United States and mastered Digital Art. Moreover, received another Fine Arts master’s degree in Towson University. The artist was a member of Yonsei University’s media art research team from 2005 to 2008 and participated in the government’s cultural project, ‘Gwangju, the center of culture’. Moreover, the artist was a staff member in Maryland School for the Arts and currently a professor of the film animation department in Art tech college, Keimyung University since 2015. Media artist Charlie Han is currently presenting works lively in both local and global market.
