가나아트 한남은 독창적인 기하 추상회화 작업을 지속해 온 메리 오버링(Mary Obering, b. 1937)의 한국에서의 첫 개인전을 로스앤젤레스에 위치한 그의 전속 화랑인 케인 그리핀(Kayne Griffin) 갤러리와의 협업을 통해 개최한다. 메리 오버링은 칼 안드레(Carl Andre, b. 1935), 도널드 저드(Donald Judd, 1928-1994) 등의 저명한 미니멀리즘 작가들과 1970년대 뉴욕 화단을 배경으로 활동한 작가이다. 본 전시는 그가 활발히 활동했던 시기인 1974년에서부터 1994년 사이에 그려진 회화를 조망하는 자리다. 오버링은 포스트모더니즘 담론의 영향으로 멀티미디어, 퍼포먼스 작업이 성행하던 당대 뉴욕 미술계의 분위기 속에서 회화의 원류를 되짚는 자신만의 길을 개척해나갔다. 이번 개인전은 이러한 성과를 인정받아 뉴욕 현대 미술관, 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 휘트니 미술관 등 세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되어 있는 메리 오버링의 작품 중에서도 수십 년간의 화업이 남긴 정수를 실견할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다. 

1971년 칼 안드레와의 이탈리아에서의 조우를 계기로, 메리 오버링은 당대 각종 미술담론이 동시다발적으로 등장하던 현대미술의 중심지, 뉴욕으로 작업실을 옮겼다. 이곳에서 그는 미니멀리즘을 대표하는 작가인 도널드 저드, 솔 르윗(Sol LeWitt, 1928-2007) 등과 교류하며, 그들의 권유로 기하학적 모듈 구조의 미니멀리즘 회화에 접근하게 된다. 본 전시에 출품된 <Firefall>(1975)은 메리 오버링의 1970년대 회화의 특징을 명확히 보여주는 작품으로, 여러 개의 캔버스 천이 겹겹이 쌓여 다채로운 기하학적 모티프들을 구성하고 있다. 각기 다른 색의 캔버스 천이 만들어내는 레이어는 2차원의 평면에서 3차원의 공간감을 만들어낸다. 또 다른 출품작인 <Untitled(Portal Series)>(1974)는 종이를 통해 <Firefall>과 유사한 효과를 꾀한 작품으로, 회화 안에 다른 차원을 암시하는 입구와도 같은 형상이 존재한다. 이와 같이 ‘사각형’이라는 형태 요소와 ‘반복’을 통한 화면의 구성은 대량 복제 시대의 상품의 생산방식을 작품을 통해 말하는 미니멀리즘 회화의 특징이라 할 수 있다. 기하학적 모듈로 구성된 오버링의 회화는 더 나아가 회화 그 너머의 공간을 환기시키는 공간감을 불러일으킨다. 

이러한 공간감과 더불어 메리 오버링의 작품의 특징으로는 특유한 색의 사용을 꼽을 수 있다. <Untitled>(1977)는 짧은 붓질로 수채 물감을 옅게 쌓는 방식으로 그려진 드로잉 연작으로, 오버링의 색채에 대한 탐구와 반복적인 행위가 만들어내는 리듬감이 특징적인 작품이다. 이 작품에서 작가는 수채 물감의 특성을 백분 활용하여 물감의 농담에 따라 색의 밝기를 능수능란하게 조절하며 이를 화면에 펼쳐냈다. 특히 1970년대 말, 작가는 르네상스 시대의 이탈리아 거장들이 사용했던 재료인 에그 템페라와 금박을 회화에 도입하며 그만의 색채를 만들어내기 시작했다. 이탈리아 여행에서 실견한 르네상스 회화의 색상에 크게 감명을 받은 작가는 과거의 작업 방식을 현대적으로 재해석하고자 했다. 오버링은 에그 템페라와 금박과 같은 소재가 지닌 고유의 색상에 주목했고, 이번 전시의 출품작인 <Untitled III>(1986)에서 각각의 매체의 물성이 두드러지도록 하는 작가만의 방식을 확인할 수 있다. 흰색의 젯소와 벽돌색의 점토(gilding clay)는 본래 바탕 면에 칠해져 금박이나 물감에 가려지는 부분임에도 불구하고, 작가는 이 재료들이 본연의 색채를 드러낼 수 있도록 이를 패널 위에 칠하고 그대로 노출시켰다. 그리고 그 옆에는 템페라와 금박을 대조적으로 배치하여 각각의 색채가 화면 위에 대비되도록 했다. 이로써 각각의 매체가 지닌 물성과 색상을 드러내는 데 초점을 둔 것인데, 이는 화면에 시각적 일루전을 재현하는 것이 아닌 형태, 색채, 물질과 같은 사물 그 자체를 드러내는 데 초점을 두는 미니멀리즘의 ‘즉물주의(literalism)’에 해당된다. 

이와 같은 형태와 색상에 대한 다양한 탐구를 거쳐 메리 오버링의 관심사는 1990년대에 이르러 ‘대칭’ 구조로 수렴한다. <PM>(1994), <Saratoga Baby>(1992)는 이러한 1990년대 작품의 특징을 그대로 보여주는 예로, 좌우로 대칭되는 형태를 띤다. 이 작품에 그려진 색면들은 형태에 있어 좌우 대칭을 이루며, 색에 있어서는 보색 대비를 통해 화면 속에서 조화와 대비를 이룬다. 오버링은 기하학적인 조형요소를 보색을 통해 대칭시킴으로써, <Firefall>과 같이 캔버스를 겹쳐 색상의 조화와 대비를 시각적으로 구현했던 자신의 초기 작업인 “Drop Painting” 연작을 회고한다. 이와 더불어, <Luna D’Autunno>(1992)에서 오버링은 L자 모양의 기하학적 형태를 대칭 혹은 도치하여 색과 조형요소가 화면을 채우도록 했다. 이처럼 작가는 다양한 매체를 통해 추상 언어와 색채의 사용을 지속적으로 탐구해왔으며, 미니멀리즘과 르네상스 회화라는 서로 상이한 미술사적 맥락들을 적극적으로 작업에 차용하여 독창적인 결과물을 도출했다. 메리 오버링의 다채로운 미술 실험의 결과물을 실견할 수 있는 이번 개인전이 비교적 주목받지 못했지만 미니멀리즘을 주도했던 여성 작가의 작업 세계에 대한 단초가 되길 기대한다.
