유진갤러리는 2022년 10월 11일부터 19일 까지 황현승의 개인전 <Calm Resonance>展 을 개최한다. 황현승은 일상에서 만나는 평범한 일상의 면면에서 아름다움을 발견하고 무감각하게 받아들이는 정립의 세계를 시적(詩的) 감수성으로 바라보며 풀어낸다. 정물과 풍경에 내적 사유를 투영하면서도 밖으로는 세상을 향한 경탄(敬歎)을 자신만의 조형적 언어로 가시화 하는 작가이다. 그의 작품 기저에 흐르고 있는 시적 메시지는 작금의 화단에서 보기 드문 탁월한 미적 성취로 평가된다. 황현승은 탄탄한 사실주의 화풍으로 출발하였으며 지금은 더욱 자유롭고 활달해진 필체로 대상에 숨겨진 내적 아름다움을 표현하고 있다. 이번 유진갤러리에서 개최하는 황현승의 개인전 <Calm Resonance>는 시간에 걸친 작품의 형식적 변화를 돌이켜보고 이를 통해 이룩한 미적 성취를 반추한다.

전시는 그의 대표적인 정물 작업부터 신작 풍경 시리즈에 이르며 다양하게 구성되며 동시에 일관된 작가의 태도를 엿볼 수 있는 기회이다. 황현승의 정물 작업들에서는 빛의 표현과 형태적 특성 그리고 독특한 구도의 미학을 볼 수 있다. 예컨대 단순하지만 사실적으로 표현된 대상이 어느 순간 색면으로 보이기도 하고, 다수의 작업에서 역광을 사용하며 직선적으로 배치한 구도 등이 그 특징이다. 이는 관습적인 정물화로부터 벗어나 황현승만의 시선과 감수성 그리고 철저한 리얼리즘적 관점에서 대상을 바라보며 그 안에서 고유의 질서를 부여하는 것으로 해석된다. 황현승은 자신의 정물화를 일컬어 ‘내면을 향한 사유(思惟)’라고 말한다. 그에 따르면, 그림은 사유나 경험 속에서 고유한 모습으로 태어나지만 그 속에 그의 의도, 의견, 사상을 내포시키지 않는다. 그가 창조하는 것은 정신적인 공간으로 남아있다.

이와 대비되는 풍경 작품들은 세상을 향한 경탄이다. 2021-2022년 작업한 풍경 시리지는 실내의 정물에서 밖으로 시선을 돌려나간 것이다. 구름을 주로 묘사한 풍경 작업에서도 빛을 잡아내는 그의 사실적인 화풍을 볼 수 있다. 눈부신 대낮의 햇살부터 금빛의 석양까지 황현승이 그리는 것은 바로 저 멀리서 비추는 빛일 것이다. 황현승은 인생은 기본적으로 암울하고 비극적인 요소가 많다고 생각하지만 그런 인생임에도 때론 사람이 풍경 속에서 아름답고 세상은 빛으로 찬란한 그런 순간들이 있다고 말한다. 그러면서 숨어있는 빛을 발견해서 사람들에게 전달해주고 싶었다고 전했다. 그가 그리는 풍경은 단순히 풍경이 아니라 사람이 주인공이고 사람들을 둘러싸고 있는 빛이 주인공이다.

황현승은 10회의 개인전과 부산비엔날레, 세종문화회관미술관, 예술의전당 한가람미술관, 제주도립미술관, 서울옥션, 가나아트센터 등 다수의 단체전에 참여했으며 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행 등에 소장되어있다.

Eugene Gallery is pleased to present the Solo Exhibition of Hwang Hyunseung Calm Resonance, happening from 11th to 19th October, 2022. Hwang Hyunseung discovers the beauty in mundane aspects of everyday life and unfolds his world of “order” in a poetic perspective. The artist projects his inner thoughts to still life and landscape while visualizing his wonder and awe of the phenomenal world. The underlying message of his works is thought to be unusually outstanding aesthetic achievement. Hwang Hyunseung began his artistic career with well-established realism. He has been developing his works with far more lively brushstorkes depicting the innate beauty of objects. This solo exhibition of Hwang showcases the changes of his figurative style through time and highlights his world of aesthetics.

The exhibition consists of Hwan Hyunseung’s signature still life paintings and newly worked landscape series, providing an opportunity to appreciate his coherent artistic attitude. His still life paintings are oftentimes characterized by the way he captures and depicts light, simplified yet idiosyncratic forms, and unconventional compositions. For instance, objects are seem like colored fields positioned in linear compositions. This is how he diverges from traditional still life paintings and reveals his own perspective of realism as well as constructing orders in his paintings. The artist calls his still life “internal contemplation”. According to him, paintings are created with personal thoughts and experience, yet they remain spiritual places free from his intention, opinion or ideology.

On the contrary, Hwang Hyunseung’s recent landscapes are, as he describes, admiration and awe of the “phenomenal world”. It is thought that he turned his sight from inside to outside. He depicts clouds of shining with daylight and dreamy colors of sunset, persisting his realistic style. Despite painting clouds, it is fair to say that he is actually painting the light coming from far away. He believes that life is full of glorious moments contrasting to tragedy and melancholy. By painting clouds, he wanted to convey the hidden light to audience.

Hwang Hyunseung had held 10 solo shows and exhibited in Busan Biennial; Sejong Center of Arts; Hangaram Museum in Seoul Arts Center; Jeju Museum of Art; Seoul Auction; Gana Art Center. His works are collected in the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea and numerous private collections.
