이길이구 갤러리는 12월 17일 부터 2023년 2월11일까지 강준영 (b. 1979) 작가의 < “O”와 “X” 그리고 우리> 전시를 선보인다. 이번 전시에서는 그의 작품 세계를 관통하는 ‘가족’과 ‘집’이라는 주제로 자전적인 경험에서 발현된 다층적인 감정을 그만의 조형언어로 풀어내며 보는 이에게 진지한 질문을 던진다. 2015년 이길이구 갤러리 개관전에 이어 이길이구 갤러리에서 개최되는 첫번째 개인전으로, 특히 기존 작업에서 한층 더 깊어진 작업 세계를 엿볼 수 있는 신작 작품이 공개될 예정이라 기대를 모은다.
이번 전시의 기조가 되는 ‘집 ’은 최초의 관계가 시작되는 곳이자 가족간의 다양하고 복합적인 감정들이 발현되기에 한 개인의 세계를 형성하는 정서적 토양이 된다. 특히 해외를 오가며 자란 작가에게 집은 따뜻하게 품어주던 할머니의 품을 상기시키는 물리적 매개체이자 형상으로 각인된다. 어느덧 시간이 흘러 사랑하는 이와 가정을 이루고 가장이 된 작가에게 어린 시절의 가족에 대한 기억은, 지난 세대인 아버지의 사랑과 이후 세대가 될 어린 아들을 바라보는 자신의 모습으로 되살아난다. 이렇게 ‘집’은 과거와 현재의 기억을 잇는 주요한 모티브로 환원되며 가족 안에서 느끼는 사랑과 충만함, 그리고 우리로서 존재하는 공동체를 수용하는 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 급격한 세대교체 등을 겪는 현대사회로 진입하며 불거진 가족 내의 세대 갈등과 가족 공동체의 해체 등을 경험하는 동시대인들에게 전통적으로 ‘집’이라는 공간이 가져왔던 위안과 안식을 상기시킴과 동시에 그 안에서 일어나는 상충되는 감정과 좌절까지 고스란히 담으며 가족과 나의 관계에 대한 질문을 던진다.이는 단순히 개별적 사유의 소재가 아닌 사회적 개념으로 확장하며 각자에게 사색의 기회를 준다.
특히 이 과정에서 작가 고유의 미감으로 표현되는 방식이 주목할 만 하다. 소환된 기억을 따라가는 작가의 가장 내밀한 감정선은 즉발적인 붓질로 치환되어 캔버스에 농밀한 흔적을 남긴다. 시간을 두고 밀도 높게 쌓아올려 화면을 가득 채운 붓질은 중첩된 기억의 층위를 형상화 하며 이로 인해 획득된 특유의 두터운 마티에르는 보는 이를 직관적인 감각의 장을 열어준다. 강렬한 인상을 촉발하는 화면 위에 던져진 작가의 질문을 통해 팬더믹 시대에 가속화된 공동체의 해체와 그 속에서 가족과 우리에 대한 의미를 되새기며 함께 생각해볼 수 있는 시간을 가질 수 있길 바란다.
강준영 작가 소개
일상을 흐르는 개인적인 감정들과 이야기들을 도자.페인팅. 영상 등 다양한 조형언어로 담아내는 강준영은 (B.1979) 서울 출생으로 홍익대학교와 동대학원에서 도예를 전공했다. 2006년 경기 세계도자 비엔날레 클레이 올림픽 대상을 시작으로, 아르코 미술관,경기도 미술관 등 국내 유수의 전시공간에서 수십 차례의 전시를 선보였고, 대만, 중국, 싱가포르, 홍콩 등 아시아 주요 지역 뿐 아니라, 영국, 미국 등의 전 세계 주요 도시에서 전시를 해왔다. 뿐만 아니라, Art Central HK 아트 센트럴 홍콩을 비롯 다양한 국제페어에도 참가해 아시아 미술인들에게 큰 주목과 관심을 받았다. 현재 그의 작품은 한국 마사회, 국회의사당, 한향림 현대도자 미술관 등지에 소장 되어있다.그는 2015년 2GIL29GALLERY <이길이구 갤러리> 개관전 <2GIL>에서는 끊임없이 방향성을 고민하고 나아가는 예술가의 사색적 순간이 담긴 작업, “ I’m Telling You, Pray For You”와 “You were There”등을 통해 예술과 삶에 대한 철학을 보여주며 좋은 평을 받았다. 몇 해전, 그는 다양한 상황에서 이뤄지는 인간의 선택과 잊혀진 가치에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶다는 앞으로의 계획을 밝혔으며 현재까지 다양한 설치미술을 포함한 프로젝트와 콜라보 작업에서 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있다.

2GIL29 GALLERY will be holding <“O” & “X” and us> by Junyoung Kang (b.1979) from December 17th to February 11th. In this exhibition, under the theme of “Family” and “Home,” which penetrate the world of his work, he solves the multi-layered emotions expressed in his autobiographical experience through his formative language and asks serious questions to the audience. Especially, he raises high expectations for the viewers as he will be unveiling works that show his deeper and richer world of art.
The “House,” the basis of this exhibition, is the place where the first relationship of one’s life begins and one’s soil for emotions as it forms complicated emotions in one’s world as complex relations within the family are expressed. In particular, as the artist grew up traveling abroad, the idea of a house is a physical reminder of his grandmother’s arms. As time passed, the artist has now become a father of his family and his childhood memories of his family are recreated through his new perspective. In this way, “home” has turned into a major motif that connects the memories from the past and the present that completes an important role in accommodating the love and fullness felt in the family and community that exists within us. It reminds people who are experiencing generational conflicts within their families and the dissolution of family communities as they enter a modern society that suffers from rapid generational change, while asking questions about their relationship with their families, including the conflicting emotions and frustrations that occur. This extends to social concepts, not just the subject of individual thoughts, and gives each person an opportunity to think.
In particular, the way the artist expresses his own sense of aesthetics is the most noteworthy part of this exhibition. His most intimate emotions are shown through his instant brushwork, leaving careful layers on the canvas. The brushwork that fills the screen by stacking them over time shapes the layers of overlapping memories and the thick matier acquired throughout opens up a field of intuitive sensation for the viewers. Through the question, the artist asks.that triggers a strong question.with his artworks, I hope everyone gets a chance to reflect and think about the definition of family, which might have been demolished after the pandemic and the following accelerated world.
Artist Introduction
Born in Seoul. Jun Young Kang (B. 1979) completed his B.F.A. in Ceramic & Glass and M.F.A. in Ceramic Art both at Hong-ik University, and he delivers personal sentiments and narratives running through his daily life in a variety of genres including ceramics, paintings, and video works. Since the winning of grand prize at Clay Olympic 2006 hosted by Korea Ceramic Foundation in 2006, he has been presenting his works not only in eminent exhibition spaces at home including Arko Art Center, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, and etc., but also in key regions abroad such as Taiwan, China, Singapore,
Hongkong, the UK, the US, and etc. Also, he received great responses from people in the art scene of Asia when he took part in multiple art fairs such as Art Central HK and etc. Currently, his works have been collected by Korea Racing Authority, The National Assembly Building, HAN HYANG LIM, Onggi Museum, and etc. In 2015, He gained a good reputation with his works such as “I’m Telling You, Pray for You”, “You were There”, and etc. through the opening exhibition 2GIL29 GALLERY, entitled 2GIL, containing contemplative moments of him as an artist showing his deep concerns. Few years ago, he said he has been planning on dealing with a choice we could make under various situations and forgotten value and has been active in a series of interesting collaborative works.
