정택영은 홍익대학교 미술대학 및 동 대학원을 졸업하고 1980년 중반부터 화단에서 활동하기 시작하여 40여 년의 작품활동을 해오고 있다. ‘생의 예찬’ 연작을 시작으로 ‘빛과 생명’ 등 생명의 존재방식과 소중함을 회화의 조형 방식으로 해석한 추상계열의 작품으로 일관해오면서 근작들은 ‘빛의 언어’란 대 명제 아래 사물의 존재와 빛과의 상호관계를 상징체계를 통한 추상적 기법으로 발표해왔다. 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 겸임교수로 후학을 양성하는데 힘쓰다가 2006년 프랑스 파리로 이주하여 파리를 중심으로 작품활동을 전개해오고 있다. 생활기반을 파리로 옮긴지 20여 년에 이르는 동안 그의 작품세계는 많은 변화를 가져왔는데, 무엇보다 화면의 단순화와 색의 절제는 그가 파리를 중심으로 한 멀티-컬처의 다문화가 혼재하면서도 상호 유기적이고도 보완적이며 상존하는 프랑스문화의 다변성과 다양성에서 영향을 받고 있다. 

이번 전시를 통해, “빛과 생명”의 유기적 관계, 현대 회화의 의미와 우리의 삶과의 관계에 대한 시각적 체험을 작품 속에서 발견할 수 있으며 동시에 “파리의 향기”를 통해 프랑스 문화와 파리의 정취를 감상할 수 있을 것이다. 1985년 이후 대학 강단에 선 후 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 겸임교수로 후학들을 양성해왔으며, 국제창작예술가협회(International Creative Artists Association) 부회장으로 세계 수십 개국의 작가들과 교류전을 통해 한국 현대미술의 단면을 국제사회에 알리고 긴밀한 유대관계를 위해 노력을 기울여왔다.

재불예술인총연합회 Féderation des Artistes Coréens en FRANCE (FACF)의 회장직을 역임하고, 프랑스에서 예술활동을 하는 각 장르의 작가들을 융합하고 장르간 협업과 상호 통섭을 통한 현대예술가들의 활동영역 확장에 기여해왔다. 현재 Paris에 거주하고 한국을 오가면서 왕성한 작품활동을 하고 있다. 

도시는 호흡한다. 

살아있는 모든 도시는 강물처럼 유유히 흐르고 인간의 삶도 흐른다.

모든 도시는 그만의 독특한 풍미와 향취가 있고 표정도 각각 다르다.

파리는 잘 알려진 대로 예술의 도시이다. 파리의 거리를 거닐다 보면 보통 2~300년 정도 된 고색창연한 건축물을 만나는 것은 예사이고 거리 도처에서 예술 작품들을 많이 만나게 된다. 

파리는 뛰어난 건축물과 문화적 경이로움은 전세계 사람들을 부른다. 파리는 살아 움직이는 도시다. 

파리는 비밀스럽고 신비한 빛의 도시이다. 윈스턴 처칠은 “처음에는 우리가 건물을 모양 짓지만, 그 후에는 그 건물이 우리를 모양 짓는다 (We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us).” 고 말했다. 파리라는 독특한 도시환경은 파리 사람들을 그들답게 모양 짓는다. 파리에서 그것을 발견한다.

예술은 눈의 즐거움이 아니라 가슴의 울림이어야 한다는 것이 예술의 본질에 대한 나의 신념이다.

눈의 즐거움은 다른 매체를 통해서도 가능할 수 있지만 예술을 통해 가슴의 울림을 느끼는 것은 쉽지 않다. 그만큼 예술은 시각적 유희에 그쳐서는 안되며 가슴으로 전달되어 감성을 자극하고 그 자극으로 인한 자각으로 삶에 변화를 줄 수 있는 힘을 지녀야 한다. 예술은 일반인이 보지 못하는 세미한 현상과 존재방식을 발견하고 이를 재해석할 수 있어야 한다. 나는 눈을 통해서가 아니라 사유를 통해 세상과 사물을 바라본다. 눈은 사물의 외형을 보지만 사유는 사물의 존재를 바라볼 수 있다. 내가 조형예술을 하는 궁극은 언어가 아닌 나의 작품을 통해 세상과 소통하고자 하는 것이다. 

나는 파리의 이미지를 표현하기에 비구상 형식을 취하지 않고 구상의 형식을 통해 그 내면을 드러내고자 했다. 루브르 박물관, 뤽상부르 공원 그리고 에펠탑과 몽마르트 언덕 등 파리는 어떤 의미에서 시내 전체가 하나의 거대한 보석과 같다. 이러한 파리의 얼굴과 모습을 구상의 양식으로 그렸지만 이것은 사실화가 아니라 구상과 비구상이 함께 혼재해 표현한 작품들이다. 

파리는 여러 별명을 지니고 있다. 빛의 도시, 향수의 도시, 꽃의 도시, 패션의 도시, 예술의 도시라고불리지만 그러나 진정한 파리는 눈에 드러난 그 껍데기에 들어있지 않고 눈에 보이지 않는 곳곳에 그들의 창조정신이 녹아 있음을 본다. 묵묵히 자신의 삶을 걸어가는 파리지앵들 표정 속에서 나는 그것을 읽었고 그것을 회화로 표현한 것이다.  2010년부터 종합예술지인 ‘아츠앤 컬쳐’에 파리의 다양한 모습들을 담은 작품과 칼럼을 통해 파리의 다양한 문화와 예술, 파리지앵들의 삶의 모습을 구상으로 표현해왔다. 이번에 필동갤러리에 초대되어 펼치는 전시에는 괏슈, 수채, 아크릴릭, 혼합재료(mixed media) 등의 여러 화구와 색료들을 다양하게 사용해 루브르나 뤽상부르, 몽나르트, 오르세 미술관 등 잘 알려진 곳뿐만 아니라 잘 알려지지 않은 생경한 파리의 뒷모습까지 새로운 미감으로 파리의 여러 외면과 내면을 표현한 30여 점의 작품들을 선보인다.

The city breathes.

Every living city flows smoothly like a river, and human life also flows.

Every city has its own unique flavor and scent and has a different expression.

Paris is well known as a city of art. When walking the streets of Paris, it is common to come across antique buildings that are usually 200 to 300 years old, and you can also come across many works of art throughout the streets. Paris' outstanding architecture and cultural wonders attract people from all over the world. Paris is a living city.

Paris is a secret and mysterious city of light. Winston Churchill said, “First we shape our buildings, then they shape us.”.. The unique urban environment of Paris shapes Parisians into who they are. I find it in Paris.

My belief in the essence of art is that art should not be a delight to the eyes but a resonance of the heart.

Pleasure for the eyes may be possible through other media, but it is not easy to feel the resonance of the heart through art. To that extent, art should not be limited to visual entertainment, but should have the power to be transmitted to the heart, stimulate emotions, and bring about change in life through awareness resulting from that stimulation. Art must be able to discover and reinterpret subtle phenomena and ways of existence that the general public cannot see. I look at the world and things through thinking, not through eyes. The eye sees the external appearance of an object, but the mind can see the existence of the object. The ultimate goal of my practice of plastic art is to communicate with the world through my work, not through language.

To express the image of Paris, I did not take a non-figurative form, but tried to reveal its inner side through a figurative form. In a sense, the entire city of Paris, including the Louvre Museum, Luxembourg Park, the Eiffel Tower, and Montmartre Hill, is like one huge jewel. Although these faces of Paris were painted in a figurative style, these are not realistic paintings, but rather works that express a mixture of figurative and non-figurative elements.

Paris has many nicknames. It is called the city of light, the city of perfume, the city of flowers, the city of fashion, and the city of art, but the true Paris is not in the shell that is visible to the eye, but its creative spirit is visible in invisible places. I read it in the expressions on the faces of Parisians who quietly went about their lives and expressed it in paintings. Since 2010, he has been expressing the various cultures and arts of Paris and the lives of Parisians through works and columns containing various aspects of Paris in the general arts magazine ‘Arts & Culture’. This exhibition, which is being held by invitation to Pildong Gallery, uses a variety of painting tools and colorants such as gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media to display not only well-known places such as the Louvre, Luxembourg, Montmartre, and the Musée d'Orsay, but also lesser-known places. It presents about 30 works that express various external and internal aspects of Paris with a new aesthetic, including the back view of Paris.
