전시내용
가나아트는 베틀과 실을 이용하여 직조한 캔버스로 색면 추상 작업을 선보이며 독창적인 예술 세계를 구축해온 에단 쿡(Ethan Cook, b. 1983-)의 개인전 《Passage》를 개최한다. 현재 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 작가는 니노 마이어 갤러리(Nino Mier Gallery, 로스엔젤레스, 뉴욕, 브뤼셀), T293(로마), 로열 갤러리(Royal Gallery, 스톡홀름) 등 전 세계 유수 갤러리에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 카포디몬테 미술관(National Museum of Capodimonte, 나폴리), 알렉산더 베르그루엔(Alexander Berggruen, 뉴욕) 등에서 개최한 그룹전에 참여한 바 있다. 2018년, 2021년에 이어 한국에서 열리는 세 번째 개인전을 통해 쿡은 《Passage》라는 전시명이 암시하듯, 과거에서부터 현재까지 그가 지속하고 있는 캔버스 작업을 되돌아보고, 그간의 여정을 작품에 풀어낸다.
에단 쿡의 캔버스 작품은 일견 마크 로스코(Mark Rothko, 1903-1970), 피터 핼리(Peter Halley, b. 1953), 카지미르 말레비치(Kazimir Severinovich Malevich, 1878-1935) 등의 색면 추상 회화를 연상시키는 구성을 지녔지만, 회화의 기본적인 요소인 물감이 사용되지 않았다는 점에서 보는 이의 예상을 전복시킨다. 그는 붓 대신 베틀을, 물감 대신 색실을 사용하여 만든 색색의 직물을 구조적으로 배치하고, 이를 바느질하여 프레임에 끼운다. 캔버스 천을 프레임에 고정시키는, 회화에 있어 기초적인 준비 과정이 그의 작업에서는 최종 단계가 된다. 이는 캔버스를 작업의 재료가 아닌 주제로서 다루며, 그 자체의 물성에 관심을 가졌기에 가능했던 발상의 전환이었다.
가나아트에서의 첫 개인전이 열린 2018년에 선보인 캔버스 작품은 사각의 캔버스 면을 기하학적으로 재단한 듯한 단순함이 특징이었다면, 2021년 개인전부터 이어지는 현재의 작업은 직선과 곡선으로 이루어진 유기적인 형태의 색면을 적극적으로 활용한 것이 그 특징이라 할 수 있다. 쿡은 베틀을 이용하여 직접 직조한 캔버스 천을 반복적인 형태의 도형으로 오려내고, 이를 사각의 캔버스 틀 안에서 자유롭게 배열하여 색면 간의 다이내믹을 형성한다. 때로는 캔버스 면이 서로 중첩되도록 배열하는가 하면, 채도만 다른 동색의 면을 차례로 겹쳐 점진적으로 색채가 변화하는 그러데이션 효과를 물감이 아닌 천으로써 구현해낸다. 이로써 선, 면, 색과 같은 순수 조형요소를 활용한 기하학적인 구성을 특징으로 했던 그의 초기 작업에서 나아가 최근의 작품은 점차 율동감이 강조된 동적인 느낌의 화면을 형성하며 더 이상 정형화되지 않은 자유로움을 마음껏 표출한다. 또한 초기작과 달리 최근의 작업에서는 흰색 또는 베이지색의 천을 마치 작품의 배경처럼 배치하고, 그 위에 채도를 달리하는 색면을 얹힘으로써 공간감을 만들어낸다는 점이 두드러지는 특징이다.
이러한 변화에 더해 이번 전시를 통해 선보이는 신작에 쿡은 화면을 횡으로 가로지르는 선을 도입하였다. 이는 사각으로 재단된 캔버스 면이 맞닿아, 화면을 가로로 분할하던 초기작의 재봉선을 대체한 것이다. 신작에서 작가는 이를 가로로 재단한 색면으로 대체하여, 유기적인 형태가 반복되며 만들어내는 리듬감의 변주를 꾀하며 화면에 긴장감을 부여한다. 이로써 그는 2012년부터 지속해 온 캔버스 작업의 역사를 응축하여 한 화면에 담아내고, 그간의 작업 여정을 되짚는다. 이러한 그의 여정을 함께 하는 본 전시가 캔버스 천이라는 새로운 매체로써 회화의 가능성을 실험하며 그 영역을 확장해가는 에단 쿡의 예술적 실천을 들여다볼 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다.
