제니 홀처는 1950년 7월 29일 미국 오하이오의 갈리폴리스에서 태어났다. 1972년 오하이오 대학교에서 판화 및 회화 B.F.A.를 취득하고 1975년에 프로비던스의 로드 아일랜드 미술학교에 석사과정으로 입학한다. 1990년도에 열린 베니스 비엔날레에서 수여하는 최고 파빌리온 상인 Leone d‘Oro, 독일의 고슬라에서 수여하는 2002 Kaiserring, 2004년 Americans for the Arts에서 수여하는 퍼블릭 아트 네트웍 상 등 주요 미술상을 수상하였다.
홀처는 오하이오 대학교에 재학하면서 작업에 텍스트를 사용하기 시작한다. RISD(로드아일랜드 미술대학)에서 페인팅을 전공하며 추상미술을 그렸던 제니 홀처의 관심은 공공 프로젝트와 ‘무엇인가 고상하면서도 인상적인 것’을 추구하는데 있었다. 그리고 그런 변화와 자극을 위해 1976년 뉴욕으로 간다. 뉴욕으로 옮겨가 휘트니 뮤지엄에의 Independent Study Program에 입학하게 되며 본격적인 첫 텍스트 작품인 ‘Truism’ 시리즈를 제작한다. 이는 종이에 프린트되어 도시 전체에 익명으로 부착되는 포스터의 형식을 취하게 된다.
근래의 홀처의 작업은 건물, 기념비, 기념관 등에 LED 설치와 1996년 이래 빌딩과 자연풍경 속에 텍스트가 배치되는 거대한 규모의 제논 프로젝션을 통해 보여지는데, 특히 프로젝션 작업은 플로렌스, 로마, 베니스, 리우데자네이루, 부에노스아이레스, 오슬로, 파리, 보르도, 베를린, 워싱턴, 뉴욕, 마이아미 등지에서 행해졌다.

For more than twenty-five years, Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas, arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, including the Neue Nationalgalerie and Reichstag in Berlin, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao. Her medium, whether formulated as a t-shirt, as a plaque, or as an LED sign, always is writing, and the public dimension is integral to the delivery of her work. Starting in the late 1970s with the posters that Holzer pasted on buildings in New York City, and up to her recent xenon projections on landscape and architecture, her practice has rivaled ignorance and violence with humor, kindness, and moral courage.
Holzer, born 1950 in Gallipolis, Ohio, received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Ohio University in 1972 and an MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975. She received the Leone d'Oro for her American pavilion installation at the 1990 Venice Biennale, was the recipient of the 2002 Kaiserring from the city of Goslar, Germany, and was awarded the Public Art Network Annual Award by Americans for the Arts in 2004. Holzer lives and works in upstate New York.
Holzer began to use text in her work while attending Ohio University. An abstract painter while at RISD, she shifted to public projects and works that were 'sublime and impressive.' Holzer moved to New York City in 1976 and enrolled in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, and there created the first
Truisms, a series of one-liners on posters pasted anonymously around the city.
Holzer's practice includes installations with electronic LED displays that are attentive to architecture, monuments and memorials; and since 1996, large-scale xenon projections of text on buildings and landscape. She has realized projections in Florence, Rome, Venice, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Oslo, Paris, Bordeaux, Berlin, Washington, New York City and Miami.
