Queer Memories
작가는 어린 시절 성적 불쾌감과 사회적 제재의 경험을 상기한다. 유년시절 성이 사회화 되는 과정과 이를 통해 트렌스*, 중성적인, 또는 퀴어한 개개인이 겪는 혼란에 대해 다룬 작품이다.
The artist recalls moments of gender dysphoria and social sanctioning in their childhood. Exploration of how gender is socialized in childhood, and how that becomes disorienting for trans*, non-binary, and queer individuals.

D S Chapman는 텍사스 달라스에 기반을 둔 트렌스* 아티스트이다. 그들의 작품은 주로 정체성과 퀴어함에 대해 형식적인또는 개념적인 접근을 한다. D의 작품은 밀접한 공간을 만들어 냄을 통하여 관객이 이분화된 성의 고정관념들을 떠나 “퀴어함 (queer)”을 경험하게 한다.
D S Chapman is a trans* artist based in Dallas, Texas. Their work is focused primarily on identity and queerness, formally and conceptually. D’s work seeks to create an intimate space in which viewers allow themselves to be queered out of the binary constructs of gender and sexuality.

Enter the Dragon: On the Vernacular of Beauty에서 Dave 다ickey는 Baudelaire의 말을 인용한다. “아름다운 것은 항상 이상하다.” 그가 의미한 것은 항상 이상하게도 친숙하다.
여러가지의 정신 상태와 조건은 인간 종족에게 있어 보편적인 것이며 우리가 살고 참여하고 있는 사회를 반영한다. 이러한 연속체를 통해 우리는 결국 다른 사람을 깊게 이해할 수 있게 된다.
“Bathing: Residue”는 의례적 퍼포먼스 영상으로 몸(body)을 사회의 연장 선상으로서 사회를 반영하며 개인 내면의 번민을 상징화하는 대상으로서 바라본다.
Dave Hickey, from Enter the Dragon: On the Vernacular of Beauty, quotes Baudelaire as saying “the beautiful is always strange,” by which he means, that it is always strangely familiar.
It can be said that going through various mental states and conditions is universal in the human race and therefore a reflection of the societies in which we live and participate. This continuum in turn allows us to be capable of understanding others at a deep and profound level.
The ritualistic video performance serves as an examination of the body as object, extension and reflection of society, and layer/symbol of the internal struggle with self.
Anna K. Lemnitzer
Anna K. Lemnitzer는 브래드퍼드 피츠버그 대학의 미술 프로그램 디렉터이자 교수이다. 그녀는 2005년 아리조나 대학에서 조소를 공부한 후 2012년 몬타나 대학에서 MFA 석사학위를 취득하였다. Lemnitzer는 전통적 기법, 믹스 미디어, 비디오 퍼포먼스 와 인스톨레이션을 통해 심리학적 상태를 반영하는 작품을 하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 Art at the X와 National Wet Paint 등의 개인전과 그룹전을 통해 소개되었다. 최근 그녀는 콜롬비아 대학 티처스 칼리지에서 퍼포먼스 영상을 전시하였으며, 뉴욕 부르클린 Call For Bushwick 국제전의 참가자로 선정되었다.
Anna K. Lemnitzer is currently the Art Program Director and Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Pittsburgh in Bradford. She earned her MFA in Art from the University of Montana School o f Art in 2012 and her BFA in Art Education, emphasis Sculpture from the University of Arizona in 2005. Lemnitzer’s visual research is grounded in processes that reflect psychological content via traditional methods, mixed media, video performance and installation. Her work has been shown nationally and solo and group art exhibitions such asArt at the Xand National Wet Paint. Most recently she presented a video performance at An Inclusive World Project, Teachers College, Columbia University and was chosen as one of the finalist for Call For Bushwick, an international call to artist that exhibited in Brooklyn, New York.

“Liquid States”
점차적으로 편재하는 기술 환경에서 “Liquid States”는 기술로 인해 국제적으로 진화한 하이브리드 형태의 몸을 제시한다. 쉽게 가변하고, 복제되고 뒤틀리는 디지털 육체는 재생의 잠재성을 지닌 태아의 몸과도 같다. 이항대립이 무너질 때 중재적인 형태의 유동성을 고려하면, 디지털 공간은 성의 이분법으로 부터 자유를 주며 이를 통해 정체성을 재정립한다.
디지털 육체의 걸쭉한 실리콘과 같은 막은 살과 같기도 하고 실험실에서 만들어진 인공물 같기도 한다. 이는 공상과학 소설에 나오는 무지개빛 광택이 나는 유토피안적 사이보그의 몸이나 성형수술 환자의 잡아당겨진 피부를 연상시키기도 한다. 작가는 환상적임과 그로테스크의 경계선상을 실험한다. 기술과 디지털 공간에 의해 육체는 오염되고 왜곡되며, 전혀 다른 무엇이 될 수도 있다.
In an increasingly ubiquitous technological climate, Liquid States proposes a hybrid body; an intentional evolution of the body with technology. Malleably extending, multiplying and contorting, the digital body holds a foetal quality that suggests a regenerative potential. Considering the intermediate form’s fluidity in a time when. binary oppositions are breaking down, I question the potential that digital space provides those that refuse the binaries of gender and sexuality in redefining their identity.
The oozing, siliconised membranes of the digital body are both flesh-like and lab-born, reminiscent of both the iridescent sheen of the utopian cyborg of science-fiction, yet also the overly-stretched skin of a plastic surgery patient. It is this exploration of the fine line between the fantastical and the grotesque that is of further interest to me. When considering the potential that technology and digital space can provide the body, I question at what point the body might become polluted, distorting into something entirely Other.

Jake Moore graduated in Fine Art (BA) from Nottingham Trent University in 2015, achieving a First Class Honours. He continues to reside and work in Nottingham, England, and is a studio member at Backlit.
